ah yes... Monty and his slouch hat. He liked the look of them so much on the diggers that he requested his own. He was given a 1940 coronet felts manufactured Aussie slouch hat. The AWM have it in their collection. Apparently the British soldiers thought it was inappropriate that he wear the Aussie slouch hat, and the diggers thought he looked like a "prize galah" in it with it jammed down on top of his head. Hi All, Any opinions on this slouch hat? I think it is a pre-WW2 hat due to the eyelets, chinstrap hooks, size and catch. It seems old and has no dates or makers marks. It's in very good condition. Also a nice large size. Andrew
What about an Aussie in a slouch hat - My dad! He didn't come home in his uniform as it was either blown off or cut off after he was hit by a mortar when the 6th Div were taking Tobruk. Happier times for him. Dad on the left Dad back centre
Gday Chippo, great collection mate! I've a few of my own but have noticed a couple of my ww2 slouch hats have lost shape and or dried out. The felt feels very dry. Do you have any recomendations on how I can sort these problems out and preserve the integrety of the piece?
Reviving this old thread to see if anyone has a photo of the Australian women's Army Service (AWAS) pattern of Hat? We have a tunic and would like to get the rest to go with it.
