These have long been available on microfilm at TNA in London, but were always a pain to find people in. They are now available to download via the Documents Online site:

The National Archives | DocumentsOnline | Recommendations for Honours and Awards (Army)

You can search for free, and downloads cost £3.50 or are free if done at TNA itself.

An example of what you get is below. This chap is a distant Great Uncle of mine whom I didn't know existed until these records were digitised!

Cheers Paul, will have a delve later.

Edit, just noticed his number, 5772197, has him enlisting in Norfolks, rather than RA who he won MM with.
    Royal Norfolk Regiment 5763001 - 5819000 .

Later edit.Doh! It says that on the form.

I have just had a quick look through this, wish they had done this before I went through about 40 rolls of microfilm inch by inch!
However £3.50 is a bit steep, to print one off at the TNA is only 20p! or 25p if you pay cash.

I may be down their in the next 3 weeks, if I can, so MAY be able to look up one or two if I am able! however I cannot promise anything as I may have to work! (always gets in the way)

    (Now waits for deluge!)

    Regards

    Andy

PS. If anyone wants any Airborne Citations I have most of them, well the ones I could find!

I hate the NA because I'm always getting lost around the website. Is there an equivalent one for the Air Force(s)?

Thanks for the link Paul. I've just printed off a copy of my Grandfather's MBE recommendation. Quite remarkable to see the signatures of the Commanders of 5 Div, 17 Inf Bde and 2 Northamptons on the document. Wonderful stuff.

Let's hope that the War Diaries follow !

    Hi Paul,

Thanks to a very good friend of mine, Hugh Vaugh, I have citations for everyone of the NIH who received decorations during WW II - including three recipients of the B.E.M, and one a bar to his D.S.O., whose names are not shown on the regiment's records. Sent copies to the NIH Historian who hopefully will correct things. Hugh sent me not only the citations but copies of the relevant pages from the London Gazette. Wonderful reading!

Tried 5 times to find my Fathers details of military medal, to no avail. Have entered all the info that i know to be true, and variations thereof. Am I doing something wrong? I hope so.

Glad this was of interest to you all.

Kyt - there are RAF recommendations but they are only available in the original at Kew, not online. I have never looked at them, except in index form, so no idea what form they take or what decorations they cover.

    Hi,

PM me with as much of the details you have of your Dad's award. I will pass the info on to my friend Paul. I know that getting the basic details from the London Gazette makes the search a lot easier.

    Cheers, Gerry

I was awarded the Commander in Chiefs recommendation (Monty's Certificate) at the badly shelled wooden hutted Dutch SS training camp. North of Venraij in the Autumn of 1944 by Lt Boyce RE. my platoon officer. I was wounded shortly after, flown home to the UK. and never got it I have searched through and found no mention of it.
