German leaflets of this type are not new to me and in the latter stages of the war in Italy they were often shelled into our battle lines. As far as being one of the most effective weapons in war
I seem to remember that they were very handy as toilet paper :)

When I made up my Army Album
(see: BBC - WW2 People's War - More on German Propaganda leaflets) I included all of the leaflets that I still had. In later years I gave one to the Imperial War museum to replace one of theirs that was destroyed in a fire.

If you go to: Ron Goldstein's Actual Army Album
and scroll down to pages 55 to 60 (you will need to go to "Older Posts") you will see the ones that survived.

thanks for beeing british and having that awesome sence of humor!

    I almost suffocated from laughing......:D

I often read about russian soldiers who used the partys newspaper (Prawda) for smoking roll-ups and using it as toilet paper. so there was a joke among german soldiers Im trying to translate:

"Why is the soviet TP so rough?" - "so even the last asshole will become red."

For anyone interested in this area of WW2 then I can thoroughly recommend Edward Boehm's "Behind Enemy Lines-WW2 Allied/Axis propaganda.

That's a great book isn't Ron? Highly recommend it myself and it can usually be found on abebooks or ebay at a cheap price.

For our German poster check out Klaus Kirchner's books on aerial propaganda leaflets Propaganda Leaflets

Suppose should give myself a little plug too:

For want of not hijacking a perfectly good discussion on Propaganda posters I had better make this my last entry to this thread...

Thanks for the kind words Ron ( ...the cheque's in the post ;) ).

German propaganda towards the Allies is rather interesting and was very often schizophrenic in character. For example the propaganda leaflets dropped on Allied troops in Italy, Western Europe and on Britain itself were mostly beautifully illustrated and visually very creative. However, the propaganda messages were usually ridiculous. It is almost as if the leaflets were produced to please themselves or their bosses rather than a genuine attempt to demoralise Allied troops.

There is no evidence that the leaflet propaganda had the slightest effect. In contrast it seems some of the more naughty leaflets were actually a morale boaster.

This is an example of the only German leaflet dropped in Italy that was thought, by the psywar experts in field, to possibly be detrimental to Allied morale:

I'm just working on an article about German postal propaganda sent to Britain, Commonwealth countries and the USA in 1939. Probably the most interesting aspect is how it changed after the outbreak of war. Beforehand the propaganda was actually rather good and believable but quickly begun to lose the plot afterwards.

It is always a real pleasure to recommend a site such as yours to the public.

It also gives me a chance to clear something up.

    When you say:

I think you ought to explain for the benefit of those forum members to whom English is not their first language that you are only kidding and that no money actually changes hands :) :) :)

    Best regards

Good point Ron, it's not just non-English speakers either, probably any non-Brits. I'm always coming out with expressions here in the US which are met with blank expressions or taken in a way they were not intended. I should have learnt that lesson by now!

To explain the above, when someone is complimentary to you, it's an old joke to pretend that they are only saying so because you have bribed or paid them to endorse you.

The Torygraph currently has an excellent set of British WW2 posters online, many of which I've never seen before. Some really nice design in there:

(By the way, I gathered several poster threads into this one, and removed a lot of posts with dead links etc., just in case anyone's confused as to why their old posts are now here ~A)
