Hey Blokes I dug this badge on on of my Metal detecting sites (Australia , QLD) last week ~ The camp site was an AIF GHQ site of WWII, We have a general idea of the badge's purpose but not positively identified ~ Even WWW.diggerhistory.com has a photo of the badge but lists ists it as 'unidentified' and requests input to identify . I had emailed the Australian War memorial in Canberra but have not heard back as yet. Any assistance appreciated ~ Seems I cannot add photos any more ~ I wanted to add this and update my extensive Blog postings but the facility to add photos is no longer available ???
CHeers mate ~ I forgot on exactly how to link photos form Photo Bucket ~ Issue resolved ~ Been so long ~ since I used this method ~ LOL
Should add. this badge has lain the dirt and mud for 70 years ~ and I simply drop these relics into Nappy sanitiser for 24 hours and lightly buff with a fine brass BBQ brush ~ amazing result ~ Here is a Captain's six Pips also retrieved ( in same hole!) and cleaned with same method last week ~
Same laurels with a different centrepiece here (fourth down), also unidentifed: http://www.ww2wings.com/wings/whatisit/whatisit.shtml Caption: "It was found in amongst the contributor's late father’s RAAF badges and insignias. He was an RAAF WAG during WW2. The badge is 50mm wide and 35mm high with 3 badge holding loops/pins." Michel
The people I checked with seem to agree on it being a variation of a Qualification Badge - Surveyors and Battery Surveyors At the bottom of the linked webpage is a similar cloth badge, depending on when the one you found was made, and if it is of British or Australian manufacture, dictates it's precise design: Artillery badges in cloth PS - the second offering from the ww2wings site has been identified as an Australian WW2 Wireless Operator's qualification badge
