Hi, I would like some advice on a book or two to purchase to learn more about WWII. I would like a book with a good overall picture of the war, including maps, pictures, weaponry, planes, ships, basically a little bit of everything to get a good foundation of knowledge about the war. I don't want to get too in depth just yet, but I'd like to learn more than the average person already knows. Thanks!
Welcome PJNC. One or two books are no good, you need to buy thousands and thousands, fill your whole house with books then keep browsing catalogues and book lists......... One I would suggest but I think is out of print now is Chronicle of the Second World War. http://www.tomfolio.com/bookdetailsmem.asp?book=19957&mem=441 Re-realsed as this http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=2-0756602963-1
Thanks for the suggestions guys. At my grandfather's house I found this great book The Encyclopedia of Weapons of World War II. It has everything; rifles, pistols, trucks, tanks, ships, jets, planes, even Molotov Cocktails! Each entry has an amazing illustration and good info. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about WWII weapons.
Ayup, I strongly recommend the Oxford Companion to World war II edited by Dear & Foot, a huge brick of a book for very little money that is as comprehensive a general guide as you'll ever find anywhere, was going to post a pic of the cover but it seems to be available worldwide under a variety of covers. Cheers & welcome, Adam.
Local libraries almost always have single-volume works on the war covering briefly the various theaters. Since these are overviews, they deal with main events and actions, but nevertheless can provide a good foundation. JT
Watcha PearlJam. Like the boys say, you'll need quite a few books, but maybe best to start with some of the Jane's guides. The Fighting Aicraft of WW2 is very good, and covers all sides and makes.

Since I am sort of new to this, these are the types of books I am looking for now. I'd like to get the broad scope of it all first, then get more specific books about topics that interest me. I'm really enjoying this Encyclopedia of Weapons for now. Thanks for the suggestions, gang!
