I can recall being issued with tins of biscuits each tin was in a olive drab colour, about 10 inches sqare and about 8 inches deep, there was a lid similar to that of a paint can which could be levered up to reveal a grab handle and a soldered panel which could be opened by pulling firmly - inside were packets of 'dog' biscuits also known as hard-tack. This was in the 1970s and some of the tins were WWII vintage!

I Can't remember which year it was but must have been some time in the 1980s when I was a truck driver. I went to an airfield somewhere in north Lincolnshire to pick up a load for suffolk. On arriving at the airfield I was directed to one of the hangars. This hangar was completely full from floor to roof with pallets of these tins. These were like Jedburgh describes except that they were about 18in high and were marked WD with an arrow inbetween the W and D and 1940 printed below. Not sure If I am a 100% accurate on this, but I was told that they had been kept for emergency use in case of nuclear war or famine.

Whilst waiting to be unloaded at this place in Suffolk.

I tried one of the biscuits, no way could you bite it even sucking it did not seem to soften it, the only way I could break it was to hit it with a hammer.

Beside the long barn in the map just above the silos it looks as if some of those tins still lie there, It was like a mountian when I was there.

What did they do with all those biscuits? They were crushed and made into

    Dog biscuits.
