Anyone a member there? It seems they're closing, & Otto's desire to preserve websites is kicking in. He'd like to offer hosting to preserve the place in whatever form the users/admin might prefer. Tried to get in touch, but new memberships don't appear to be getting activated & email hasn't yet responded. If anyone can pass the message on via this thread: WWIIReenacting.co.uk Forums • View topic - The End of an Era - Closure of WWIIReenacting.co.uk It would be very much appreciated. Otto can be found here or at 2F, or: It's a truly open-handed offer. Otto 'rescued' us once, and has left us completely alone regarding day-to-day running for a decade or so. Cheers, ~A
I'm a member on there and thanks to Firefox, I was still able to log on...Someone has copy-pasted your post here onto the announcement thread, but getting a response from the administrator has been a nightmare for longer than I can remember. Reenacting is of course a bitch-fight in the real world and the lack of consistent good-humoured moderation there was a killer...I'm sure that it caused people to leave in droves. There were one or two regular posters there who were looking for conflict...
It used to be a great forum with lots of very smart people but as Rich mentions there were a few people just wanting fights, plus others whose posts far outweighed their knowledge and the good members just drifted away, recently I've only gone on about once a month and the new/updated threads are usually in single figures. I used to post a lot but when I asked questions never really got any useful feedback, unlike on here when the vast majority of questions get very helpful answer.
Tried to use that site for research once but found too many of the members to be lacking...! I don't know the guy who ran the forum but I have run forums myself in the past and I can say, from bitter experience, that it's not always easy to be capable of "consistent good-humoured moderation". It always seems to be a fun idea to run a discussion forum of 'like-minded' people but after a while it becomes a job, on top of all the other jobs you have in your life, it's no longer fun and those 'like-minded' people are all like-minded because they're all a bunch of arses with an entitlement complex.
I emailed Chris with an offer of help almost a month or so back now. Could someone reply to Correspondent in the thread that I've reached out to Chris and that an offer is on the table? I'm willing and able to keep the site going, but I've not received any response as yet. WWIIReenacting.co.uk Forums • View topic - The End of an Era - Closure of WWIIReenacting.co.uk
Cheers to whoever LOB is on WWIIReenacting. Still no word from Chris, but I'm hopeful. Though I've not gotten any word from Chris, I have gotten a good number of messages about him and about the WWIIR website. A surprising amount was negative, so I'll be posting something on WW2F about the current state of the site as I see them and hopefully I can provide some useful context for people who are frustrated. Very few people have the first hand experience of being a website admin, and being one of those people I hope my perspective will be helpful. I'll post here when my message is up.
"consistent good-humoured moderation". Another chance to say thanks to our great moderators. Good job.
It’s totally gone has it ? That’s s little sad, but I think inevitable . It did die a slow death for various reasons and Facebook took over . As Facebook becomes ever more reactionary , and makes the words, bomb , gun , nazi , ammunition and penis ever more difficult to use , such forums may return . I’d semi forgotten it’s very existence if the truth be told
