Does anybody know the history to the Luftwaffe painting their fighter engine cowlings in yellow.
I read that they started doing this during the Battle of Britain but why? Did the Luftwaffe have a history of shooting down their own aircraft?
    Any answers would be great.

    Thanks Tom as always.
Good site, the book I read led me to think that the Luftwaffe first used the yellow paint during the BoB. They more than likely used it quickly spot RAF fighters.
