Thank you Stolpi for these copies and the links to the Pathe film reels. I live in the Operation Blackcock area, so this is very interesting for me.

Hi Richard I am also interested in your area, My Father and two others were given shelter in a house in Born in the winter of 1944. In 2007 we traced the family and returned to Born it was shown on Anglia Television and Dutch Radio, We also visited Sittard and Susteren. Father was in the 7th Armoured Div and his Brother was with the 52nd Lowland Div.

Thank you the family in Born copied me a film on operation Blackcock and Father says the thing he remembers was the mud and helping a heavily pregnant woman pulling a pram though the mud. He always tells me those sort of stories the other ones he keeps to himself.

    Hi Stolpi,

I'm trying to add something to my knowledge of the actions of the SRY in January 1945 in Operation Blackcock as part of the 8th Armoured Brigade: The Sherwood Rangers in January 1945

Is the film mentioned in posts #4, #5 etc of this thread still available (on youtube for example?) somewhere?

pm me if you prefer, by all means.

    All the best,

    Rm.

Just to repeat Alan's request - I've never seen this thread before and would appreciate seeing the links to the maps and films.

I'll also add that I recently bought The Battle for the Rhineland (Reginald W. Thompson) and there is a decent map in there and chapter devoted to the operation. I've also viewed maps and picked up information in various unit histories (Mountain & Flood - History of 52nd Lowland Div, Churchill's Desert Rats, The Fighting Wessex Wyverns, Four Five - History of 45 RM Commando).

However, there doesn't seem to be a book devoted solely to Operation Blackcock. Does anyone know of one - or perhaps someone needs to write one?

Thanks, Owen. Never knew about this book. I remember searching a while ago, but maybe I only looked under 'Operation Blackcock', not 'Roer Triangle'.

Just looked up Erskine hospital - seems like a good cause, so I might buy it:

    Hi all,

Sorry for digging up this cadaver, I just registered as I stumbled across this post. I'll introduce myself in another topic.

I don't longer do metaldetecting but I'm still very interested in ww2 history. Currently I'm especially keen on documenting and tracing back the steps of two military actions, mainly the German sides of operation Blackcock (especially concentrating on the Höngen > Heinsberg/Ruhr crossing area) and the aftermath of market garden, mainly von Maltzahns move east in to/through the Helmond/Deurne area.

Unfortunately most documentation (incl this topic) mainly consist out of dead links as they were posted years back. Therefore I was hoping that you guys are able to help me with some more documentation, after action reports and tips for literature. I already have ordered Har Gootzen's book and have the 74 page operation report. I'm also very keen on getting my hands on German maps and also allied reference maps (1:100,000) GSCS 4336 sheets 4 and 9, GSCS 4416 sheet R1. As I'm not planning to dig for anything I'm more than happy to share information when it starts to become more visual (just started). I can read English, German, Dutch and French so any input is welcome. Document numbers in archives are also welcome as I'm willing to travel (I travel to the involved countries regularly so it's a good way to spend my weekend).

    Thanks a million!
