That's pretty much them - I don't get any particular make, just go on Ebay when I need more (in fact I need more now). There must be so many stories behind them that I don't know yet and wont until the WW2 records are opened up - I really like the Mitchell twins ones - concurrent Army numbers and the when promoted concurrent Officers personnel numbers - same Officer Training Unit - be interesting to know if they went to the same unit after that or if they went their separate ways. I also like Vic Walker's - he served alongside a veteran I knew well and they were good friends - he mentioned him a couple of times - unfortunately he died before I got it so I couldn't show him it or ask for more information. I haven't seen that file for Naylor so have now added it - I have lots of odds and ends like that but not that one. Alistair
Alistair. I have been searching for ages for information on my late father. It seems you have his pay book.! 680 Hardingham-Graveling Harold Edward. I would dearly lover to see a scan of it. Kind regards Stuart Hardingham-Graveling.
On another forum I remarked that despite the wealth of WW-2 era German senior ranked (Oberst and above, and especially General ranked) paybooks that have been available or are seen in museums there seems to be a distinct contrast to WW-1 in that there doesn't seem to be any for senior officers. Is this true as well for British/Commonwealth related WW-2 paybooks? Do such examples come on the market (or exist in collections/museums) for high ranking officers or were they issued something different?
Hi, Officers had AB439's rather then AB64's Officers Record of Service Book (Army Book 439) I haven't seen all that may WW2 ones about and cant remember seeing any for high ranking officers. Alistair
Another 60 or so added to the list with the main page added to All Service Books by Alistair Taylor as always I can do more scans if any of these are of use for people research and if anyone can add anything I would welcome it Thanks Alistair 1465 ROE, ALBERT EDWARD 1115886 AB64 (part 1) RA THEN 1048 PORT OPERATING COMPANY RE ENLISTED 20/2/41 KILLED IN AMMUNITION EXPLOSION CAIRNRYAN 25/6/46 1466 HIBBERT, PETER ERNEST 2370994 AB64 (part 1) 11TH ARMOURED DIV SIGNALS ENLISTED 15/5/41 WOUNDED SW CALF 12//44 1467 TEALE, EDWIN S/113551 AB64 (part 1) RASC ENLISTED 18/10/39 POW BEF 1468 OUTTEN, HARRY 1423214 AB64 (part 1) ENLISTED 13/2/22 1469 TAYLOR, ROBERT JAMES 904405 AB64 (part 1) RA THEN 7TH ROYAL WARWICKS ENLISTED 10/5/39 1470 MASON, SAMUEL HARRY 1051955 AB64 (part 1) RA THEN SUFFOLK THEN 2nd CAMBRIDGSHIRE ENLISTED 15/5/29 POW 15/2/42 SINGAPORE 1471 EVERETT, EDWIN 1525664 AB64 (part 1) RA ENLISTED 15/12/39 MISSING PAGES 5/6 1472 VERMEULEN, JAMES 1797850 AB64 (part 1) RA ENLISTED 24/4/41 1473 LOVELL, TERENCE FRANCIS GEORGE 2061910 AB64 (part 1) 1ST AIRBORNE DIVISION WORKSHOP REME ENLISTED 11/10/38 1474 LIDDLE, JOHN ALBERT 3525064 AB64 (part 1) ENLISTED 26/3/31 MISSING COVER 1475 JENNINGS, LEONARD FREDERICK ARTHUR 22251353 AB64 (part 1) ENLISTED 15/2/49 MISSING PAGES 7-14 1476 BRAY, JOHN CHARLES 1478091 AB64 (part 1) 472 BATTERY/75 SL REGT RA ENLISTED 23/8/39 WOUNDED 8/10/40 1477 UNISSUED RAF FORM 64 (part 1) PRINTED 9/39 1478 UNISSUED RAF FORM 64 (part 2) PRINTED 9/39 1479 GUTTERIDGE, GEORGE WILLIAM 2064707 & LT/JX202092 AB64 (part 1) & S43A ENLISTED 19/10/38 (ARMY) & 24/6/40 (NAVY) AWADED DSM – LG 8/1/42 FOR SERVICE IN THE BATTE OF CRETE 1480 JONES, FRANCIS SIDNEY 6092555 AB64 (part 1) C COMPANY 1/6 QUEENS ENLISTED 16/10/39 WOUNDED (BROKEN ANKLE) 22/5/40 NEAR TOURNAI 1481 RICHARDSON, SAM WILLIAM 1535514 AB64 (part 1) RA ENLISTED 18/4/40 AWARDED MBE 1482 HAYLES, VICTOR HENRY 13048327 AB64 (part 1) REME ATTACHED 7TH BLACK WATCH ENLISTED 11/7/40 1483 HEWITT, ALFRED WILLIAM CHARLES 1622830 AB64 (part 1) 93RD (A&SH) ANTI-TANK REGIMENT RA & FIELD ENLISTED 29/7/40 1484 EID, PIERRE MARIE BAR THILENY 4117 AB64 (part 1) BELGIAN CONTINGENT MEF ENLISTED 7/10/43 1485 TUNESI, JOSEPH 83534/1013453 AB64 A BATTERY 38 BRIGADE RFA ENLISTED 17/8/14 AWARDED MM 1486 BATT, H S 842759 FORM 64 (part 2) MIDDLE EAST PRINTED ATTESTED 12/12/38 REPORTED FOR DUTY 24/8/39 1487 GRIFFITHS, LESLIE WYNDHAM 7359124 AB64 (part 1) RAMC NO4 PARACHUTE SURGICAL TEAM ENLISTED 16/10/39 PARACHUTE TRAINED 1488 WHALE, GEORGE EDWARD 4749420 AB64 (part 1) 1ST GREEN HOWARDS THEN REME ENLISTED 14/7/43 WOUNDED 20/4/44 1489 UNISSUED S43A MARCH 1943 EDITION 1490 TODD, ? Thanks for the reply. Someone replied to my query about the WW-1 German high ranking equivalents and mentioned that it was stated in regulations that at the end of service the paybook was meant to be closed out and handed in for it to be archived and then after a period of time it was to be destroyed which would certainly explain the lack of examples seen. Were their similar regulations for the British/Commonwealth Paybooks which might explain the lack of high ranking examples?
Hi, Online Canadian infantry service files (deceased personnel only) usuallly contain a number of paybooks - sometimes including the one recovered from the deceased's body. Steve Y
Interesting to know, RCAF records also contain the casualties service book (I guess they didn't carry them on Ops) so it looks like the Canadian way was to keep the books where in Britain it was policy to return it to the family (not sure about Australia, New Zealand etc) Alistair
I read the previous two messages with great interest. Sometime ago, in my hunt for my Grandfather`s paybook, I sent away for a copy of his personal effects record to see if it had been returned to the family after his death. Unfortunately the digital images I was sent in return were rather poor making it very hard to read (see attached). It would appear however that his AB64 may have been sent to the Regimental Paymaster / Leicester in order for his pension to be sorted out? It seems to say "Paybook - Received - (Despatched To) - Retainer or Retained? Can anyone explain this further? Would his paybook have been kept by the Army then never returned to the family? It seems a bit strange to do this. If so, could it still exist in some Army pension file somewhere?
Last week I visited Prague and visited many of the sites relating to Operation Anthropoid. Within the vault display is this Paybook for one of the agents sent to kill Heydrich, Josef Gabcik that I thought members might like to see.
Hucks, I saw that when I visited last year and it caught my eye, I'm going back next month for the anniversary so will have a look again Alistair
Ian, I'll look out Burtons but can't do scans at the moment, I've managed to break my laptop (hence the slow reply), I can possibly manage photos and mail them through Alistair
Hi.. Lol. Don't worry there is absolutely no hurry My friend has his medals. He may even ask if you would be interested in selling him the paybook... You may be a collector and not interested in selling.. But scan / photos is fabulous My email is Ianw.sythes@hotmail.co.uk Thanks very much Ian
Hi Alister, Tried sending photos of Burton medals but not sure if they uploaded, will try again .. I think I maybe thumbnailed them and made them too small. So have gone big. Nice group my friend has.. hope they are as expected. I like to see the original ribbons and the medals not polished to death. Wish it was my group. Left a couple of posts in conversation slot, but not sure if you recieved them. best wishes Ian
Henry Orlando Ridgley is my grandad and I'm looking for more information on where he served. Can anyone help?
BMNYE. If you get his Service Record from Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow, all will be revealed. FdeP
Ian, it is not wise to advertise your own personal e-mail address on here....Its not the done thing... Why have other members not pick up on this? Has this become the norm? Regards, Stu.
