Here's an example of a random card I had a look at.

This chap just had the buff coloured card. Others, as noted in Discovery, may have more information and a photograph. I guess that might depend on how much of a nuisance the POW made of themselves.

There is a unique TNA reference per individual so will be near impossible to digitise them in bulk. Will have to be one man at a time.

Something is odd about this card for aPOW from Norway/England and it says dischared home. yet to another STALAG.
STALAG 10 and?, cannot read that letter.

Is it saying discharged home from Stalag 10B?

It defenetly says to STALAG 10 B. A little doubt about the letter B.

The camp name is rubber stamped top, left 'Stalag X B Sandbostel'.

So is the card saying he was taken from his home, in Norway, and imprisoned in Stalag X B on 29th April 1941?

This is a bit of a mistery: he was in Sandbostel and released to STALAG 10b, unless it is not a b, but an a for Schleswig, just a bit further north to be eventually taken home to Norway.

    Hi,

This appears to be an Index Card for a civilian detainee? - Dienstgrad (Rank) shown as civil? Service number is blank.

Stalag 10B may have been the first destination for prisoners transported from Norway? A relative arrived there Aug 1940 from a Lazerette in Norway.

Below is a copy of useful German phrases on the Index Card - from TNA blog.

    Steve
    • Camp name (Gefangenenlager)
    • Camp number (Gefangenen Nummer)
    • Country of origin
    • Surname (Name)
    • First name/s (Vorname)
    • Place and Date of birth (Geburtstag und Ort)
    • Father’s first name (Vorname des Vaters)
    • Mother’s maiden name (Familienname der Mutter)
    • Name and Address of Next of Kin
    • Religion
    • Health and illnesses and subsequent treatment
    • Date and Place of Capture (Gefangenname – Ort und Datum)
    • Where transferred/transported from
    • Details of escape
    • Details of death
    • Service (e.g. Army, Air, Navy, Civilian) (Truppenteil)
    • Service rank (Dienstgrad)
    • Service number (Matrikel Nummer)

I received this today it was free emailed to me by an employee of TNA. abit of a story behind the find, Stanley was coming up with two hits in the online archive one as convay and another as Conway are these two separate cards I wondered, I contacted the TNA and they sent me this email along with the pow card.

(Yes, I did notice that there appeared to be a matching individual and so I have compared the information on the cards. The dates and places of birth matched and so I have amended the catalogue to show both Convay as it was originally described and Conway as we are satisfied that the two cards relate to the same individual. The original writing could be read as either Convay or Conway. It is not uncommon to find that cards relating to the same individual have become separated over time. As we have been cataloguing these records we have tried to reunite records of individuals however this has not always been possible. I appreciate that as this has not been possible in this instance you would now need to order two documents to be copied instead of one so I have attached a scanned image of document WO 416/74/546.

now looking on the site he's only coming up as Stanley Conway is this another card ?Name: Stanley Conway . Date of Birth: 22/09/1919 . Place of Birth: Rotherham . ... | The National Archives I also do believe Stanley was with theincrebledisc grandfather as documented in his dairy which i must say a big thank you for uploading it, so he must have another card as this one is stalag 12.

There are two different record sets for Stanley, document refs WO 416/74/563 and WO 416/74/546.

Are you ordering copies directly from the National Archives? How much are they charging if you don't mind me asking?

    Hi,

I’d start a stand-alone topic titled “German Document Translation Required” and attach the document - and you may get more interest from suitably qualified members

Sadly my O Level German from 40 odd years ago doesn’t fit the bill!

That’s great that you’ve had some success. The whole point of uploading the diary and transcribing the names was the hope that others out there might find their family members. As far as I can tell there’s no sign of my John Conway in that Archive or a least he hasn’t been found yet. I tried a FOI request to the pensions agency as I had heard that some ex-POWs had to send proof of being a prisoner to enable claims to be made but after much to-ing and fro-ing they knocked my request back as I couldn’t give them an NI number to search.

Thanks for feedback guys. I haven’t had any time as yet to order the other card but soon as i do i will post the prices ect I will get around to it this week,

As for the current card I already have it was sent to me from an employer of the archives for free during my inquiry to them I don’t know why I was given it for free maybe it was a gesture of goodwill for the mix up during the cataloguing I doubt it but I like to think it was.

I also wonder if it may be worth a try also applying to the pensions agency just to see what it turns up for Stanley ?

They are, however you can apply for a one off search (for an additional fee) of the archive if you don’t fancy waiting for your letter to come up.
