Hello everyone. I’m new to the site I have a high interest in ww2 like the rest of you guys. I’m involved with living history group who portray 101st 82nd US airborne. US 2nd 3rd armoured div and British airborne.

I’m looking to find out some information during 8th/9th September 1943 Salerno. My uncle died at age 21 on 9th sept 1943 his grave is at Salerno cemetery. He was with 5th Bn Hampshire regiment.

Photos, footage diary info etc be helpful. Even a captain log for a boat the bn was on.

Appreciate any help. This information I can pass onto my 92yr old grandad my uncles brother. My grandad memory is fading and he mentions his brother before fighting the war. Heart breaking to see his tears. My grandad was stationed in Egypt, Tunisia, Africa during 1944-1956 in the RAF. He has done well to live his life to see 92. His wife (my Nan) has also served her time during ww2 as a nurse. She is still going about her daily life at 94yrs and still fit as a fiddle.

    Thanks

Gary Tankard may be able to help you out with the diaries of the 5 Hampshire Regiment? He has a shed load of War diaries of 56 Division. You could try & obtain a copy of D. Scott Daniell's book on the Regimental History of the Hampshire Regiment Vol III. If Gary has not got the diaries, then Tom OBrien may have them?

    Welcome to the forum.

In addition to your interest in 5 Hampshires, were you aware of 82 US Airborne Division, at very short notice, jumped into the Salerno beachhead to reinforce the American sector?

I am there in Mar 19 guiding a group. I am happy to stop and get you a photo of his headstone if that helps.

    Regards

    Frank

There's also a book called 'Hampshire Boy' by Douglas J French who was a Pre-war Regular who was a Sgt in the 5th Bn.
He was in the Mortar Platoon at Salerno.

I'm not up to speed with what went on at Salerno,( but its about time i started to read more on it.) It looks has if died on the opening day to me? Until someone comes up with the War diaries, then this is the best that i can offer.. The scans are from the Regimental History that i mentioned in my post 5.Edit. Owen, thanks for that.

    Regards,
    Stu.

    Hello Leec,

I do have the 5 Hants diaries for Sept 1943. I'm a bit snowed under at the minute because of Christmas but can send them when I get chance. Note they are handwritten in pencil. However, the summary in Stuart's post above gives a good summary of the disaster that overtook 5 Hants on Hampshire Lane.

    Regards,
    Gary.

Some more detail about Owen's post 7 (see image below!) ISBN 10: 18582184X & ISBN13: 9781858218427. It was published by Scottforth books in 2001. 253 pages ( First Edition) illustrated with b/w photographs. I will not name & shame the Shysters who want £75.00 for them (That must be a typing error.?)

    Cheers Owen ;)
