According to file WO392/21, POW's held by the Italian's as of August 1943, Frederick was being held at Campo 65, Gravina.

Several years ago, I photographed the file WO224/127 at the National Archives and put it up on the forum here. It might give some idea of the conditions experienced at the camp:

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

The details are in the link in Post #2.

You could also apply to the Red Cross for his POW papers from their records on 20th May via this link -

Requests for information about people held during Spanish Civil War or the Second World War: Quarterly limit reached

It’s a free service but you’ll have to be quick off the mark filling in the online application form that will appear on the link about 8am 20th May as it will likely be removed by mid morning when the quarterly limit will likely be reached - going by previous experience. You get documents through the post after about 4 months.

Request records of deceased service personnel - see also post No 2 - you will need a copy of his death certificate

I assume this is him although it is a different death date to the one you mentioned earlier

England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007
    Name: Frederick Charles Trenfield
    Death Age: 80
    Birth Date: 10 Jan 1918
    Registration Date: Oct 1998
    Registration district: Nuneaton and Bedworth
    Inferred County: Warwickshire
    Register Number: A32C
    District and Subdistrict: 7681A

    TD

  12. I think this is him but like you said the date of death is different
I’m going to try to see if my uncle will talk to me about him as he’s the only one that had contact with him until he died

As far as i know he was in 7 Commando and was posted to L Detachment at Kabrit late August 1941. In L Detatchment he was in No. 1 Troop, No. 2 Section, F Group along with Tommy Corps, Harvie and Billy Morris, on Operation Squattet he was in Flight No. 1 under the command of Captain Stirling along with Georgd Yates, Len Colquhoun, Stanley Bolland, Ernie Cockbill, Bob Tait and Johnny Orton. Jimmy Storie told me they were known as 'Stirlings Guard'. All suffered some sort of injury on landing Bolland was never found, only Stirling and Tait were able to continue plus most of their supplies were missing, they were sent to the rv but took the wrong turning and later argued and returned to the fork in the track and took the other route which as it happens was the wrong one, once they realised their error they about turned and set off for the rv but knew they would be too late and decided to head for the second rv but were eventually picked up by the Italians who were driving British trucks thinking they were the advancing troops from Crusader and duly went into the bag. My dad Johhny Orton passed on most of this years ago and other info came from the Regimental Association. My dad also said when he was sent to Italy the ship he was on was torpedoed by the Royal Navy and the survivors ended up in Gredce before being movex to Italy so your grandfather may well have been with him, i believe one other from those captured was killed during the torpedo attack. If i can help further drop me line and i can see what i can come up with.
    Kind regards,
    Alan Orton.

Hi. I've come across your post whilst talking to my other half about the lovely bloke who lived next door to my nan. I knew your grandad as he was my nans neighbour for years. I'm happy to share any stories as my dad spent many years talking with him :)
