Can anyone please help with information on this man - Sq/Ldr William Greenaway - who was shot down near the Channel Islands and made a POW. I believe he spent a good part of his internment in Stalag Luft III. Many thanks
William Joseph Henry Greenaway born 3 June 1915, Knaresbro, Yorkshire. Enlisted in the RAF at Cardington mid 1940. NCO service number was 1194051. Commissioned Pilot Officer 17 June 1941. Officer's number was 101024. Shot down 8 November 1941 while flying with No. 501 Squadron. Spitfire serial AD188. Was at Stalag Luft III. POW number 697. But as Luft III wasn't established until March 1942 you'll have to find where he was between Nov 41 and Apr 1942. Perhaps Stalag Luft 1, Barth or Oflag XX1B, Schubin? Promoted Flying Officer 15 June 1942. Promoted Flight Lieutenant 17 June 1943. No sign of a promotion to Squadron Leader in the London Gazette so perhaps acting? Deceased November 1994, Ewecross, North Yorkshire. Regards, Dave
A thread that includes him is here: Spitfire Vb crashes in Alderney 1941/42 and here: The Battle of Britain Historical Society Discussion Forum - Spitfire crash in Alderney, Channel Islands.

Thanks to all who responded. I checked with the family and this is definitely the right man (there was more than one Greenaway at Stalag Luft III). The detail provided here has filled out the detail already known.

403601 P/O Lindsay Gordon Greenaway was a wireless op on a No. 460 Sqn Lancaster lost in September of 1943, thus ruling him out. Deceased Burleigh Waters, Queensland August 1995.
Thanks TD, I didn't know that at first but I ruled him out when I saw him in an ANZAC photo taken in the camp
