47192 Major Oliver Thomas Morton RAYMOND, 1 Royal Welch Fusiliers

Hello,

I'm looking into the fate of Major RAYMONT, Oliver Thomas Morton (Service Number 47192), 1 Bn. The Royal Welch Fusiliers. Son of Thomas and Christine Marion Morton Raymont, of Carbis Bay, Cornwall. B.A. Hons. (Oxon.).

Regarding his death the following is mentioned in the War Diary of 1 RWF on the 15th of May 1940: "[...] A/ TK. gun manned by personnel of 1 R.W.F. was put out of action in Ottenburg. Major Raymond, commanding 'A' Coy, went fwd. to see what was happening and was shot in the spine. He died later. [...]."

'A' Company 1 RWF defended the river Dyle crossing at Florival (Ottenburg).

Major Raymont died the 16th of May 1940, and was buried at Ninove Churchyard (Belgium). In the 1950s his body was exhumed and reburied at Heverlee War Cemetery in Heverlee (Belgium).

Any information about Mayor Raymont is most welcome (e.g. paper clippings, obituary, portret photograph, military citations, other accounts ... )

On the passenger manifest for the ACCRA departing Liverpool 16 June 1935 bound for Lagos, Nigeria..... noted as a Lieutenant in the army.



From British Army lists 1839-1946 - shows his attachment to the Nigeria Regiment, RWAFF.... believed located at Ibandan in 1935.

There are several family trees on Ancestry that include him, and couple of other records (1 x Probate and 1 x travel) but they dont add much to what you already have above. Unfortunately there are no photos of him in any of the trees
