Now you're talking! Please excuse shading of tankette (I was young once and knew no better) Kind regards, always, Jim.
Breeches! Should maybe be a bit more trunk hose-ish, for 1588, he looks civil war to me, but close. Trunk-hose make you walk funny. In a good way Then there's Pluderhose. The ultimate military bigtrousers. Slightly disappointed the Guild of St. George chap isn't rocking some Greek pom-poms.
Landsknechts were mentioned earlier in the thread. Saw these stained glass windows on the stairs at Greys Court earlier & thought I'd add them to the thread. Greys Court
With apologies to Jedburgh22, this is one of my favorites for the title of silliest uniform (under the circumstances) . . . .
Next to the Lützower Freikorps, my favourite: Leib-Husaren-Regiment „Königin Viktoria von Preußen“ Nr. 2 Ungratefully, a certain Nazi military organisation has unscrupulously helped itself to this then very prestigious image and thus done irrevocable damage to the memory of this highly respected unit....sigh No matter where you look, the Nazi scum really went out of their way not to like them.
I have a soft spot for the one-time 66th Illinois Infantry, sometimes known as Birge’s Western Sharpshooters. Their Dimick and other plains rifles had a cachet of their own, but the sugar loaf hat, bedecked with the regulatory three squirrel tails: would have been rather cool. Alas, the subsequent squirrel tail shortage meant that this embellishment seems to have been discontinued: but the bowed cravats brought something else. I have a tenuous kinsman link to the Regiment, but sadly no photograph and wonder what he wore. Whatever, he must have been able to shoot, an entry level qualification being … “each recruit had to hit a target 10 times at 200 yards. To make the grade, the shooter had to hit “three shots to measure no more than 10 inches,” meaning his three most inaccurate shots were no more than 3¹/³ inches from the center of the bull’s eye.”
