No Remembrance Sunday parade at Horwich, Greater Manchester, today, sadly. Cancelled due to Covid-19. Lots of lovely tributes at the War Memorial and surrounding area this afternoon. Photos are attached.

There would of been silent tributes all over the British Isles at every war memorial we can’t be stopped even if some would like us to forget. Our little village has four dead on it from WW2 but villagers turned out .Nice to Swindon doing their bit Owen

Nice to see some of my old haunts there Clive. The Civic Centre car park was the scene of many a game of cricket back in the late 1970s.

I walked down to our War Memorial this morning to observe the Silence and to pay my respects. There were about half a dozen of us there, no ceremony or wreath laying, that having taken place on Sunday.

The Memorial is on a roundabout, with obvious consequences, but I remember a time when the traffic stopped in this country at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month. Very sadly, not today. I must be getting old...

How remarkable and fitting, Clive, given that Flying Officer Vernon St John, 232 Squadron, whose photograph I saw placed on our Memorial today (see above) is described on his CWGC entry as the “Son of Marie Weiss of Pinner, Middlesex”.

I love the poppies going around the top of the memorial, a nice touch. I hope they put them up when there wasn't too much traffic (if it is busy normally)! It would be nice if the custom of stopping traffic was reinstated, but I suppose people would protest.

You can certainly imagine the grumbles coming in, can’t you. Everyone in a hurry nowadays! The traffic is stopped by the police on Remembrance Sunday, as you would expect given the road is to be occupied by the crowd, but not on a Monday-Saturday 11th.

T’is a nice touch, isn’t it. We had strong winds and lashing rain here last night, so I hope the Memorial still looks today as it looked yesterday, especially given that the rather charming small pot (never seen that before but it did “grab” me) and, of course, the photograph were not secured.
