    And:

Washington, D.C., August 19, 2021 – The U.S. government under four presidents misled the American people for nearly two decades about progress in Afghanistan, while hiding the inconvenient facts about ongoing failures inside confidential channels, according to declassified documents published today by the National Security Archive.

At least with Dunkirk a plan was then built for the end game.
With Afganistan it was the wests Nagasaki

No and it never will. The people who made the mess are all desperately fighting to blame the other. You can see one of the main culprits whinge here:

Afghanistan: Blair calls US withdrawal tragic and unnecessary

The cynic in me suspects there will be no carping/whining here about him getting called out....................

    Why would that be?

The world needs to get a grip on this and stop the blame game
They always rely on the Americans to lead the way.
Thankfully for the American people biden has shown what it is like to have a puppet in power and they might not make the same mistake next time
Afghanistan is lost unless they or another shove 200,000 troops on the ground which will not happen

I think those references wouldn't mean anything to most Americans. They probably wouldn't have even used Dunkirk if not for the recent movie. We know Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima and that's about it :(

    Yes of course

if the liberal left took its head out of its arse and worked with people and stopped telling everyone how bad they are and everything they do is wrong without a suggested solution perhaps the world would be a better place

When we had the big demonstration by those who wanted to 'protect' Churchills statue in London one reporter moved among the crowd and asked them what they thought about Churchill's record. Not one of the interviewed seemed to know anything at all about Churchill.

. I was very careful not to make my posts partisan. I blame 'left' and 'right' equally.

No cunning involved. A while back I realised the problem is the people who are utterly convinced their brand of politics is 'right' and everything else is' wrong'. Yes I have leanings but I make sure I do not fall into the trap of automatically defending everything I lean towards' whilst automatically opposing everything I do not 'lean towards'. For example when replying to your Biden slights I answered in a way that did not have a positive mention of Biden and was critical of both him and Trump.

Great like showing trump wearing a nappy

    of course
We could go on like this forever

when we allow a coventry mp to wear a face mask showing a flag and its ok.
If a politician wore a face mask with the other flag all hell would let loose

sheeps is not what we are

any way we live in a free country where we can have our own thoughts without red hot pokers being used

A mention was made of one man needing a 'carer'. I replied in a way that did not deny he needed a 'carer' and then contrasted this with another age-related problem that afflicts his predecessor. I made them equally struggling with aging problems.

    Chaps,
Everyone's done remarkably well on this unique allowance of a thread that's going to inevitably connect to current world politics, but hopefully marks a bit of modern 'Military History' too - without the to-ing & fro-ing.
In those words so often heard outside nightclubs at kicking out time: "It ain't worth it! Come away".
Simple thread bans from now on, I'm afraid. Nothing personal, just removing the ability to reply on this particular thread. If anyone finds they can't reply; they've been booted without further explanation.
    Cheers.

Watching the news the other day & feeling immense sympathy for the 20-something squaddies at the spear point of military & political collapse.
Those chaps guarding the embassy & airport, pushing into crowds to assist specific people while calmly as possible holding off the desperate mass are in such a peculiar position. Volunteering for the army sometimes means you volunteered for things maybe even more difficult in some ways than open warfare.

And as for the patrols into town, sometimes with Taliban co-operation... What a 'job'. There'll be some interesting memoirs & accounts from there.

UOR? Well, maybe a couple of pickups?
