Hi, I am looking for any information about army camps in Market Levington near Devizes, Wiltshire. A relative of mine JOHN QUICK died aged 32years old in 1950. He was knocked off his bike and died of his injuries 2 - 3 weeks later. His occupation was a Night Watchman at an army camp? Can anyone help me please. Regards, Pauline.
Hello Pauline, You may find this map a good starting point. Image-4-Camps-SPTA by nicks posted Jun 13, 2022 at 5:34 PM How Military Camps saved some Wiltshire villages from extinction | Wiltshire at War Nick
Have you checked the British Newspaper archive ? Search the archive | British Newspaper Archive Might be something in the Gazette & Herald. I'll edit thread title as Frank is correct.
Hi Nick and Minden, Thank you for the help in regard of army camps near Market Lavington. A couple of questions 1. Is there any way I can find out which camp John Quick was stationed? 2. With John Quick having an occupation as a Night Watchman - would he be classed as working for the army? Or would he be in a civilian capacity? Thank you again for any help. Regards, Pauline.
As he married in 1945, as a first step, I would get hold of his marriage certificate to see what his occupation was. First name(s) John J Last name Quick Marriage quarter 3 Marriage year 1945 Registration month - John J Quick married one of these people Honor V Fielding Spouse's last name Fielding District Devizes District number - County Wiltshire Country England Volume 5A Volume as transcribed 5A Page number 345 Record set England & Wales Marriages 1837-2005 Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Civil Marriage & Divorce Collections from Great Britain, England
Interesting that he is mentioned in the Wiltshire Memorial Inscription Index First name(s) John Last name Quick Birth year 1918 Age 32 Death year 1950 Death day 18 Death month May Place Market Lavington County Wiltshire Country England Notes husb of Honor Reference 98416 Record set Wiltshire Memorial Inscription Index Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Parish Burials Collections from England, Great Britain The above is courtesy of the Wiltshire Family History Society so would be worth contacting to see if more details are available. However not on the Market Lavington war memorial Market Lavington WW2 | War Imperial War Museums (iwm.org.uk) Just for info:
The current Death Certificate has Occupation and Usual Address. Would his 1950 Death Cert. have that information too? Reading your posts it is not clear if you have that document. If he was a civilian Night Watchman he would be a War Office employee; the War Office being the predecessor to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). See: War Office - Wikipedia Wiki indicates the town has a museum, could they help? See: Market Lavington - Wikipedia have you found their website: Market Lavington Museum ? Just spotted Pauline's post there.
Hi Tony and David, Thank you so much for all information given to me. I am so pleased this has been a BIG brick wall. Regards, Pauline.
