IG JOURNAL 1959

From Irish Guards Journal, 1959: UNVEILING OF THE BROOKWOOD MEMORIAL BY HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN. The Brookwood Memorial which stands in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Near Woking Surrey, was unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen on 25th October, 1958. The Memorial is dedicated to the memory of officers and men of the Land Forces of the Commonwealth to whom the fortune of War denied a known and honoured grave. Upon this Memorial are carved the names of nine Irish Guardsmen, some of whom lost their lives in the campaign of 1940 in NORWAY. Owing to the Battalion being overseas in CYPRUS, with the exception of IRISH GUARDS Staff Officers at London District, the Regiment were only called upon to provide two Flag Unfurlers for this Ceremony. The Imperial War Graves Commission, who are responsible for the upkeep of official memorials, invited Brigadier J.O.E. VANDELEUR, Major T.D. McCARTHY, Mr. S. SHERIDAN and Mr. T. MILLIGAN to represent the Irish Guards Association.
