Yes, GHQ micro-armour is nice stuff; I had a lot of it when I wargamed in the 80s (still have it somewhere) but it was always quite expensive and the barrels often came off. I quite like a lot of the 'new' scale - 10mm/12mm - armour that has come out in recent years. Big enough for the eyes to see and paint, but small enough to represent large scale battles and operations. See, for example: Blitzkrieg Commander (1936-45) & Cold War Commander (1946+) Fast-Play Tabletop Wargame Rules For Combined-Arms Operations
Yes, GHQ is expensive as heck, but at the time I was working as an advisor to a model shop helping them with their wargames side and I was able to buy stuff at cost, so I ammassed two very large forces, US and USSR for WWIII in the 80s. Then Gorbatchev showed up and he spoiled all the fun, no more T-80s running for Fulda Gap! For WW2 I also have an comfortably large Soviet force (with an avatar like this what do you expect ) but in 1:300, Heroics & Ros and Sotia. Not so gorgeous as GHQ or CinC, but quite acceptable and much cheaper. I'm working up on Brits for the Fall of France as well.
mollusc emailed me photos of his Maus. Ready to go on his wagon. Maus and 14-axle railway transportation wagon. German WW2 super-heavy tank and the "verladewagon" built to carry the Maus, made by Simmering-Graz-Pauker of Vienna.
Nice bit of work! I had one of these from ?Navwar/Skytrex; think I still have it somewhere. It was just a large 'blob' compared to this.
More shockingly good work Mollusc. The vents below the mantlet made me have a proper look at some drawings, I'd never registered the mid-engined configuration before. Curioser & Curiouser. Amazing Planet - Maus Tank Cheers, Adam.
His latest creation. See it as work in progress here... Z-PANZER.COM - The ONLY place for Z scale armor
They look rather good indeed, wouldn't mind buying quite a few myself to embellish a shelf. As a matter of fact that's what I'm going to do. Thanks very much for bringing this up from the depths, Owen
went to see mollusc this afternoon with me mum's dog. Impressed with his 2 latest creations, some modern vehicles. M113 Transportpanzer.
I'd missed that too Adam. The Merkava was supposed to have been revolutionary with it's front engine placement but the idea had come much earlier and probably from a source the Isreali's wouldn't credit. Hard to tell from the schematic but I assume the Maus engine placement also had the effect of protecting the crew from any frontal armour penetration?
More protection over the 200mm sloped hull front slab? What the heck for? The Maus layout was the same as the Marder III and Elephat jagdpanzers, for instance, I never saw any mention of using the engine as additional crew protection.
The little tinker just sent me a pic of what he said was a 1/72nd M48, asking if I think he'd be able to do it in 220th. In fact it was the 220th scale one. He's also done a Pzh2000 - modern German SPG and Opel Blitz.
The Merkava was supposed to have been revolutionary with it's front engine placement LOL hardly! The Scorpion/Scimitar or any member of the CVR* family? The Vickers' Lights of WWII and before? Even the Medium MkA "Whippet" of WWI!
just had this email. Latest offering from Z-Panzer Panzer IIIN Amazing just how fine the detail is on such a small scale. Superb modelling. Regards Tom
Mollusc, I hate you a little bit. Great work from your imps, 'cos I know humans can't model that small... (The M48 is frankly mental.)
Actually, I've just realised; you are simply the owner of a very large biro. Curses! Curses, Von Poop you have found me out. I thought making a 1/72nd kit in a shoddy fashion and then photographing it against my bloated biro would fool you pesky kids!!!!
