All I can see is a white screen with a grey rectangle with a red X in the top left had corner.
    :(

EDIT That's odd, I tried for a third time to view it and there it was.

    Looks good Gerry.

Gerry - Just noticed the line drawing of the Churchill with the 95mm bombard carries the number of 173 -which was the 145th RAC which you replaced at Cesena in Dec '44 and the insignia of the 21st Tank Bde - good to see again !

It will not be published (in Australia) untl sometime in January - that is if I can finish the text in time before going to London in a couple of weeks. Autographed will in be coming - with so many requests I will be getting writer's cramp!

That is a 'C' tank driving ofver a Churchill Bridgelayer placed by 51st RTR - all NIH drivers had to practice going over it.
    There are more pictures on:
    Photographs Italian Campaign

The drawing is of Ballyrashane - the 5th to wear the name - her photo should be in the final work.

173 was 12th RTR's (yours 175) until the NIH joined 21st TB to become the senior unit - the two RTR units had to change theirs to 174 and 175.

Peter Gudgin tells me that both the COs of the 12th and 48th RTRs were somewhat upset, however, Brigadier David Dawnay soon set their thinking straight!

Gerry - there are sometimes that we had the number 173- we had to change them all to those new numbers a day before the Gothic Line started - I think it was to try to confuse Kesselring that we were the 1st Cdn Armoured Bde- he was already confused as he still thought we were all hanging around the Florence sector - took him a few days to send in 1st para - 26th Panzers and 29th PG's - that slowed us down a bit !

Can well imagine the C0's of 12th and 48th being uptight - they were regular battalions ! - the new 12th RTR C.O. was our old Squadron leader - Lyall Lusted from A sqdn 145th - Strubanzee was off to Cairo for a Staff job !
    Cheers

    Gerry -
On the "Flames of War" web site there is a review of the Numbering system used by the Allied tanks in Italy and it shows that the 145th had the number 173 as well as the note that the 145th was the senior regt - this if fact is incorrect as the 48th was the senior - I can't reproduce the graph showing the numbers but they are there !

    The Tank Brigades

    21 Tank Brigade
Like all the tank brigades the diabolo played an important part in the unit sign. Initially this was just a simple blue diabolo, but by 1944 a yellow background circle with a red devil wrapped around the diabolo was added. They used the 172-175 arm of service series on a yellow over red box.
The numbering system used for the 21st Tank Bragade was changed from that illustrated on 22 August 1944 when they were changed enroute to the Gothic Line battle to support 2nd bragade of the Canadian 1st Division. They colours of the Arm of Service numbers were changed to those of the 1st Canadian Armoured Bragade.

    Right: Churchills in Italy.

    Hi Tom,

Prior to the NIH joining 21st TB the sequence was 12th RTR, 48th RTR , 145th RAC, not as incorrectly shown in the Flames of War item you mentioned :
    http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=325

I wrote to to them about, and I think Peter Gudgin also did but I am not sure. Here's an extract from his book:

"One final change in the signing of tank units of 21st Tank Brigade resulted from the brigade again becoming independent: the unit tactical numbers once more became 173. 174 and 175. instead of the 67. 68 and 69 allotted when the brigade had formed part of 4th (Mixed) Division. Now, however, this number was carried in white on a square in the Royal Armoured Corps colours of red and yellow, rather than the earlier brown, the square being divided horizontally
into two halves of which the upper was yellow and the lower, red. The 48th was allotted ‘174’ until 145th Regiment RAC was disbanded in early 1945 and replaced by the North Irish Horse. when, as the junior battalion of the brigade. it was renumbered ‘175’. "
