What sort of information are you after? - I only have access to publically accessible information - what information do you already have, as I might find details but it may only replicate what you already have

    LRDGEgypt,

There is a thread on the ILRS and there are several references to McCoy, reflecting my research and help from others here. Plus the LRDG historian.See: Indian Long Range Squadron

I had not looked for a photo of him, so will add a link to this thread.

Thank you is interesting. There are hardly any photos of the British officers of the ILRS I had found one picture of Hudson put it was in a very poor quality that it was not usable. There were also at least 3 Indian Officers serving with the ILRS there are even no single name for them. I/m preparing a reference book of the LRDG from 1940 -1945 and I would like to include the ILRS into it. What is on the other ILRS thread is everything that is known about them until now. Officer Nangle died during the 2 World War after leaving the ILRS so I m looking about some details there.

Regarding Mr Nagle the information I found two years ago was:
I was only able to identify one Indian officer, who was named s with the ILRS upon their return to India from the expedition to Iraq. He was a Captain Akhtar Islam.

As a very "long shot" you could try the Indian cavalry regiments which provided men to ILRS upon formation. I say "long shot" as my contacts with those identified as possible helpers could not help and it appears that individual regimental records (assuming they survived Partition) are held by their successor units.

There is a very long, detailed biography of Lieutenant Gilbert William Nangle (later Captain, then Major) on: Major Gilbert William Nangle - Cookstown War Dead

I was puzzled at the reference to the French Foreign Legion (FFL) and fighting in the Spanish Civil War, with the Nationalists. The biography refers to him being excused from the FFL in 1930, after two years lobbying by his mother and joining the Spanish Foreign Legion, as an officer in September 1936. Leaving due to injuries in early 1938 and in the summer of 1938 joining the Palestine Police.

He was one of three brothers, one died in 1931 in a Fleet Air Arm shipboard accident and another brother who by 1944 was Lieutenant Colonel George Slator Nangle (501240 or 337322), 9th Ghurkha Rifles (he survived WW2).

The passenger list above does show him embarking in Gibraltar and that his country of last residence was Spain

Thank you all, Seaforth, TD, davidbfgo, I think the ILRS pdf file I had received from Alan Orten. I wonder if there would be other pictures show up from any person who had served with that unit. As far as I understand there were 3 Indian Officers at the formation of the group, that should be either dec 1941 or January 1942. The officer mentioned above was after Iraq, would we consider him one of the original indian officers? Or was he a replacement? Any further. information you could come up with would be great.

    Hi davidbfpo
Samuel Vallis McCoy is my grandfather on my mums side, he passed away on the 11th of July 1976 Downderry in Cornwall and is buried in the Weston Mills Cemetery in Plymouth. He went to Cambell College in Nothern Ireland and joined the Indian Army - his regiment the Skinners Horse??
He was instrumental in setting up the Indian Long Range Scouts which was modelled on the LRDG in January 1942 - comprised mainly of Indian personel.
In October 1942 the ILRS came under the command of the Long Range Desert Group.

Renewed research to find Samuel Vallis McCoy's (b. 25/11/1908) grave has drawn a blank. It might be complicated by him passing in 1976, in Cornwall, his home village had a family connection, then buried in Devon, in a cemetery which was historically named Devonport Cemetery and where his two older brothers, both Royal navy veterans are buried. A local family history group has copies of the cemetery records, so that is an option. About to update Dom May.

Just found a reference to an Indian officer with the ILRS: Sujan Singh Uban. A previously unknown website refers to:
    Link: Long Range Desert Group

No additional research done. Added just in case LRDGEgypt has id'd him before. Please note the website refers to the ILRS being disbanded in 1943, wrong!

Discovered via Twitter that a Dutch military historian circulated a very short (28 seconds) film clip stating it was the ILRS on 10/11/2020. It is available via: https://twitter.com/rgpoulussen/status/1326057673775837184

I am about to contact him and update him it is not the ILRS!

After checking the clip is from the Pathe News film 'E Boats of the Desert' and is not the ILRS, it as others pointed out awhile back the Guides Cavalry. The full clip is available on (previous links no longer work): Indian L.R.D.G. Unit 1943
