30second effort do`nt have photoshop and no expert but I`ll put this one up as an example of what can be done.(No doubt Nicola will do better on the high res scan) http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=42747&d=1293715503

The first Ink removal results are in courtesy of PsyWar.Org (Lee) Photo.1 is the original. I think you will agree its been cleaned up very nicely Over to you Nicola
Right, have sent it to Dave. Hopefully he will like it. I will let him upload it. Yet again another sterling job done this time by Nicola, I like both the sepia and black and white versions from Lee and Nicola. Pic No.1 is the before. Thank you both very much it really is appreciated
Well done everyone. Just a suggestion: If it were my photo, I'd be making sure that during the framing process, the 'window' in the mounting card only was cut a little smaller ie to 'crop out' the blank top and bottom, the original need not be damaged in any way by this method ... and it might bring the 'eye in' a little more.

It is a very good suggestion and one I was considering
If you like Dave I can redo the file with a large white border, which will make framing easier. Let me know or can crop as suggested and add a white frame as well and send as a separate file.

Just a quick posting - as an observer. Isn't it great that a message asking for advice to restore a damaged photograph, can generate not only advice, but an offer to to the work. Nicola G must obviously be a nice lady. I nearly said it restores faith in human nature, but it actually reinforces it, when it was there all the time.

Nosmig You will find this forum full of very decent helpful people, Nicola is indeed a very nice lady and very talented as well
Greetings KingArthur, Pardon my very late input on your photo restoration project. The advise against "rescuing the original photo" was indeed wise. Restoration of the original will require a qualified artist. There is no "quick/easy fix" that will be unnoticeable. Digital retouching is the proper alternative. I might suggest retouching the entire image as it appears to have enough detail to reproduce it with a substantial improvement in image clarity. Contact WW2 Design - WWII Images - WWII Art, and Photo Design if you are interested in retouching/enlargements of any vintage photos you may have. Good Luck,

Thank you KA, Yes, I get involved with the (obviously) "current day" location photography and art direction. The website will be updated soon to include WWII theme photos and video - topside and underwater WWII wrecks.... (and samples of restored WWII photography). Stay Tuned.
