Hi on watching long lost family tonight on STV I thought I would look for where my Grandfather's memorial was I came across this Tread This is My Grandfather Horace Knowles Webster lost but never forgotten x
Hello Susan, at present Horace is still commemorated on the Lowestoft Naval Memorial. Details of this memorial here Cemetery However following research by myself & the team at In From The Cold Project we found that his body had been washed ashore on the Kent coast following the sinking of his vessel. At present his case is under investigation by CWGC & if as I hope that the case is proven his commemoration will be moved to Hawkinge Cemetery. I cannot say if he has a headstone at present. Cheers Chris
Just reviewed this case as it is some time since I looked at it. He has a CWGC non war casualty headstone with his grave being in the service plot at Hawkinge. This situation came about as he was misidentified as a member of the Merchant Navy. As & when CWGC accept my findings he should receive a headstone identifying him as member of the Royal Navy Patrol Service. His name then should be removed from the Lowestoft Naval Memorial when the relevant panel is replaced.
Thank you so much for your reply I’m so surprised to hear this information this is amazing I would be so glad to here if there is any more info I lost my mum 3 years ago she would have been astonished to here this info Look forward to hearing from you This means the world to me x

For info There is a non war headstone for him at Hawkinge with 2/9/42. He was a Cook in the Merchant Navy. All records have name as H K Webster. Cemetery records state he was a Casualty of War. Died with 4 others on 19 Aug 1942 off Dover, when their ship HMS Golden Sunbeam was involved in a collision and sunk. His body was found at Folkestone on 2 Sep 1942. The ship, which was a Steam Drifter, was hired by the Admiralty as a flare vessel in 1939. H K Webster (unknown-1942) - Find a Grave...
Horace Knowles Webster was enrolled into the Royal Naval Reserve on 18 October 1917 as Boy, Cook, later Trimmer, Cook on service number TC 1233. Service record - BT 377/7/109756 He served aboard the following hired trawlers in 1918: H.T. NULLI SECUNDUS H.T. GLORIA II H.T. WALLINGTON He also has another record under service number SBC 1433 but it is only a reference to his service TC 1233. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Seems he was issued with service number LT/MX 88016 on joining RN 17.1.1940. Royal Naval Reservists were recruited from merchant seamen and fishermen so it is likely he served aboard MN ships prior to WW2. Regards Hugh
