Stu did you not ask where the wheel came from
Assume numbers on the tyre relates to the tyre not the wheel

    what size are they

I've got a similar looking wheel that was found on a airfield 1979. It's still inflated, and thought to be a Spitfire tail-wheel ?

It looks very similar to your one Stuart. Had to dig it out of my shed, and it's still inflated. 1940s Air ? DSCF1763.JPG DSCF1756.JPG DSCF1755.JPG DSCF1754.JPG DSCF1759.JPG DSCF1760.JPG DSCF1761.JPG DSCF1765.JPG

The markings on the hub would better identify the source aircraft. That tyre size was used on a number of aircraft tail wheels, including the Anson.

The best I could do, it seems quite faded in places.

If I read it correctly the last photo looks like DRG No. AHO5779/1 or 1X . I have found a reliable source that puts 5779 /8 as fitted to an Airspeed Oxford, but that's all I've found do far. An example of those markings are attached below. If it is issue 1, then its fair to assume that it was fitted a somewhat earlier type. I've had no luck on the serial number on the other side.

Does anyone have any contacts with the restoration guys at Duxford, they may be able to reference it?

Many thanks for your time and effort. This wheel was found in a ditch at Haddenham airfield, Bucks. That was about 1979, it was inflated then, and stillis now. Though why that should be ? Working at Airtech just after, who were based on part of the old airfield, there was a part-time cleaner in the Chippy Shop nicknamed Spitfire, not because he was fast at his job, but because he worked on Spitfires during the war. He said the wheel was from a Spitfire. ?

Nothing to say that it couldn't be, just looking at how you could delve further if you want to. For me there is nothing worse than being almost sure.
