Hi My Uncle John Thomas Davies was in the 1/6th South Staffs Battalion he was a private. And on the casualty records If I have the right person he was wounded on the 16th July 1944. His army regiment number was 4916508. How do I ;find out more information such as hown he was wounded etc?? Are the WW2 army papers worth getting? How much information do they contain? I know he was at Dunkirk and was rescued via one of the little boats at one point. Any help or information would be much appreciated. Thanks
Hi Sharon Send off for his service records - they are ONLY available from the MOD and the forms are here Request records of deceased service personnel you will also need a copy of his death certificate unless he died in service These will tell you exactly which unit(s) he was in and when and where, from these records you will also be able to find out what unit he was in when wounded and from that you can obtain the War Diaries for that unit over that time and it should provide details of where or what was happening at that specific time TD
Hello Sharon, please find below an overview of 1/6 south Staffs in France 1940. At the beginning of the first page it has a little on the Battalions of The South Staffordshire Regiment from the start of the war too. Writing/language very much of the period, individual companies are mentioned, as are officers, and some from the ranks. And, should you discover that your Uncle was indeed in 1/6 in France (and you can't do better than following TD's advice above in determining that) this will at least give you some information as to what those chaps went through. Good fortune to you with your searching. Kind regards, always remember, never forget, Jim.
