  2. Wow! Thank-you.

    Apologies for hijacking this thread.

How interesting. Seems to undermine some of the stories relating to D-Day and Belsen. But haven't ruled it out just yet.

Sounds like he was in the UK in Feb 1945. Redeployed from HAA to infantry.

626th and 628th Infantry Regiment RA were under command 306th Anti-Aircraft Infantry Brigade in Devon and moved on 4 May 45 with the brigade HQ from Okehampton to Purfleet, Kent staging the night at Yattendon, Berkshire, both regiments did not arrive with the brigade HQ in France and have yet to find out where they went, awaiting Kew documentation from Lee@arcre that hopefully will give details :)

Can confirm the only RA units in Berlin were 3rd & 5th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and briefly 344 (Independent) Searchlight Battery (Moonlight)

21st Army Group later British Army of the Rhine (under construction)

Hi , My Grandfather , William Moore was a Sargent in the 113th 370 bt . When they arrived in Hannover towards the end of the war he was put in charge of a large pub/hotel in Seelze , nicknamed THE NO FRAT INN , as they were ordered not to fraternise with the locals . it was used as a canteen by the troops. My grandad is the middle soldier in the picture . 20230111_160253.jpg

Great photo. I didn't have a reference to William but I do for two other Moore’s serving with the 113th. Did William have relatives he served with that could be on this photo?

Hi Nick , no relatives that I'm aware of , grandad didn't have brothers not sure if he had cousins but can take a look at the family tree .What names do you have for the other Moore's?
One of his buddys was know as Bracken of Barnsley but we have no info on him other than that. One of the others could be him but would be speculation

New to the forum but arrived here whilst searching for more info on my Grandad, Alec Roach - he served with the the Sherwood Foresters/Durham Light Infantry/RA and ended up being the camp commandant at Stiffkey training camp post 1945. I know that he was at Belsen - as a young kid my Nana let me look at his old records and I remember pictures of the poor souls there - she told me that he helped set up a school for the orphaned kids apparently. I've got a few bits and bobs of his - a clock he was given on retirement and a very over the top trophy for shooting - as well as things like the "Story of Belsen" as mentioned earlier in this thread and some other fascinating documents such as messages from Monty to the troops at Christmas...

Would love to know if anyone has come across Captain Alec (Alexander) Roach - he was originally from Blackburn but ended up in Buxton hence the link to the Sherwood Foresters.

Because they were an Anti Aircraft unit, I would imagine that they were no longer needed to defend against a non existent Luftwaffe.

Just a few of my grandads photos at the NO FRAT INN - 1945 . The victory salute at Belsen - his gun is marked with the x - and Grandad sitting with the gun
He mentioned Brackin from Barnsley - has anyone come across anyone of that name? Im sure he will be in the picture with the gun as they got up to all sorts together

The top 2nd picture is of my grandfather Jim Fagan. Driving his Bedford truck. We are tracing his trip through Normandy next month and have used this forum to plan our stops
