In the early stage of the assault he was severely wounded in the thigh by a sniper. He continued up the hill and lead the final assault on the crest. Here in attempting to bayonet a German he was shot in the stomach at short range. Regardless of these wounds he re-organised his Company and consolidated the position under heavy Artillery and Mortar fire. He remained in Command of his Company for a further 3 hours with his wounds unattended to. Having satisfied himself that his Company had completed their task, he deliberately walked back unassisted to the Battalion H.Q., a distance of one mile across rough country and reported the capture of his objective. Not until then would he go to the Regimental Aid Post. The Medical Officer later stated that the wound in Captain BULL's thigh alone was sufficient to stop any ordinary man - apart from the severe wound in the stomach.
