    The war diary of the 1st Leicesters show that on the day Private Altoft died, the Battalion were moving to a concentration area, prior to commencing an attack on the heavily defended Depot de Medicitie, west of Merxplas.

    On the three previous nights, they were subjected to intermittent artillery bombardment by the enemy, resulting in the loss of one Officer killed, 3 Officers wounded and 22 Other Ranks wounded. Private Altoft may have been one of these men and died from wounds, or from wounds from a previous action.
