Wanborough is just over road from me, I could see the village church from my old house.
Shame, I didn't realise he was in Hermanville as was there last October.

    Hi everyone,

I am researching Desmond ADAMS and wondered if you could help me: -

    Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

    PRIVATE DESMOND ADAMS
    Service Number: 14422299
Regiment & Unit/Ship - Dorsetshire Regiment and No. 6 Commando
Date of Death - Died 06 June 1944
    Age 19 years old
Buried or commemorated at HERMANVILLE WAR CEMETERY
    Grave: 1. A. 8.
    Location: France
Additional Info - Son of Stanley and Daisy Adams, of Wanborough, Wiltshire.

I would like some help in finding out exactly what No. 6 Commandos did on the 6th of June 1944 - D-Day, I am wondering if they were in the very early stages of D-Day, and I am in awe of the fact that Desmond was, along with thousands of others, in the thick of it all at 19 years old. I would like to add anything to his story that would help us understand the courage and the fear that he must have had, as others too, on that day.

    Any hep would be appreciated.

    Mavis,

Welcome back two previous threads on him (id'd by service number): June 6th Commonwealth Deaths Id'd him as landing on Gold Beach (minus details) and a grave photo: 6th June 1944 Private DESMOND ADAMS 14422299, Dorsetshire Regiment and No. 6, Commando

Using an online search "6 Commando" + "D-Day" site:ww2talk.com there are many threads, one refers to a general book on what the Commandos did that day.

The book may be the one on: Royal Marines Historical Society (RMHS)

There is a B&W 1943 photo of them, with a list of names: No 6 Cdo Panorama July 1943 with all the names

No. 6 Commando took part in Operation Torch and fought through to Tunisia, incurring heavy casualties, so did not take part in the Italian landings and returned to the UK.

He was originally reported as wounded under wrong army number, later confirmed as died of his wounds.

Thank you all so much, you are all fantastic, as usual, thank you for the link Dave re what happenned to Desmond, and thank you davidbfpo for all the links and the photo with the names, although I had the photo, I didn't have the names, but sadly Desmond's name isn't on it, at least I couldn't find it, and the Gravestone photo too. It all helps tell the story, so he is not forgotten. Thanks again gentlemen.

    HISTORICAL CONTEXT

6 Commando embarked at Warsash on 5 June, 1944 and landed at intervals on Queen Red sector, Sword Beach from 08:40 on D-Day.

They advanced to Le Plein, taking a German battery en route, before crossing the River Orne and Caen Canal at Bénouville and continuing through to Breville.

Heavy casualties were incurred there due to sustained mortar fire from a German gun site located just outside Breville shortly after they arrived so they withdrew. The circumstances of his death are not known.

  12. Hello, I am French and passionate about the 6 Commando, I would like to know if you have a link with D.ADAMS do you have a photo? There is a farm in Amfreville, Le Plein, where Desmond did not have the chance to arrive. This farm was the HQ of the 6 Commando for 2 months…

    Hi Mavis

I am currently working on researching the histories of the men on the village War Memorials near the White Horse. At the moment I have set the limits from Childrey to Hinton Parva. Wanborough is the next along after Hinton Parva. Are you local - it would be good to find a kindred spirit!!

    Hi Tony,
I'm sorry, Im in North Wales, I have researched the men from WW1 and WW2 on all the local memorials that I know of, but far away from you. They are on flintshirewarmemorials.com, but if there is anything I can do to help, I would be happy to try.

The bug bit me many years ago, in 2011 and have been researching servicemen and servicewomen since.

Good luck with your project, we all need one, I must say!

    Regards,
    Mavis

I am also researching the D-Day Memorial, that is why I was researching Desmond ADAMS, he was not on our local War Memorials.

Sad that he was not recorded on his local memorial, I found quite a few on ours and they are now have been awarded a place there, after help from local officials. They deserve to be remembered.

Oh that's bad, so, easy though, I suppose. You have to be so careful. Thanks for that CL1. Much appreciated. Mavis
