IN MEMORY OF L Trooper GEORGE OLIVER LEWIS 7016901, 148 Indep. Sqdn., who died age 22 on 28 May 1942 Son of Alfred and Caroline Lewis, of Kentish Town, London. ST. PANCRAS CEMETERY Service Plot, Grave 73. If this list is incomplete please let me know. Cheers Paul
I know something about this. It happened when the 148 was at Uttoxeter. Extracts from the diary of Lieutenant W.J.Milne (my father): 28-05-42 An awful thing happened at the range today. Trooper Lewis was shot dead by Trooper Evans. An inquest will be held on Monday where I suppose they will say why he died. 29-05-42 Peter was disgusted at the Major's performance yesterday. Apparently he wouldn't come and view the body and he wouldn't allow his car to be used to take Lewis to the doctor. Eventually he allowed the Humber to go and fetch a policeman……Poor old Knox had to go to Brigade with him afterwards. They had to go to Lichfield.
Thank you. I have a good record of the 148 because he kept a diary (as a 2nd Lt. and Lt.) throughout the unit’s existence. He was appointed Adjutant of 49 Recce upon its formation, but his diary-keeping tailed off after the first months and I am more reliant on the patchy insights derived from surviving letters. He also wrote a short piece on his war in 2006. He was moved to 147 Brigade during the campaign in France and thence to the BAOR. I notice, though, that his 1946 release papers still classed him as a Recce officer and the badge is there on the final iteration of his uniform. Cheers, Robin
Could you post some more information about your father in a separate thread? There is not much information about 148th Ind Recce. Cheers Paul
