Hi, is there any info here or diary extracts that might mention motorcycle racing off the Baltic Coast after the war ended in 1945. The person I am trying to research (Ken Miles)without his records, was in the 15th/19th Hussars LAD attachment to the 11th Armoured Division. When occupying Schleswig Holstein in downtime motorcycle races were organized and I would like to know who competed.
Paul I can confirm that the 15th/19th Hussars were based in the small Baltic fishing port of Kappeln in support of 159 Infantry Brigade of 11 Armoured Division throughout Summer 1945 A couple of photographs in the German Book "Die Briten in Schleswig Holstein 1945-1949" ,first published in 1989, confirm that Motor Cycling both in the Speedway and Cross Country format was a popular recreation activity
I admit, I am in the deep end. I might have to visit the National Archives at Kew for war diaries for the 15/19 Hussars LAD. Just interested in the period when they and the 11th Armoured Division occupied Shleswig Holstein in 1945. Does anyone know if there are reference numbers for these diaries, something that can help me find what I am looking for. I ultimately want to know about the motorcycle racing in that timeframe.
Yes probably too specific. Can you help with ref numbers regarding 15th/19th Hussars for that timeframe? Have you actually seen these war diaries? Perhaps someone here has some?
I've got the regimental history and there's a Corporal Miles mentioned twice in the book but he doesn't appear to be part of the LAD. I have a copy of the BEF 1940 war diary and the 1944 diary
