Hi all I am new to the forum and apologise in advance if I'm not using it correctly. I have done some basic searching already but nothing substantial has shown up. Anyway, I am trying to research my deceased father-in-laws history. He, typically perhaps, didnt talk about the war when he was alive apart from mentioning he served in Burma. I have since found some interesting papers belonging to him. His name is James (Jim) Rigby from Warrington, Cheshire. I have a Certificate of Gallantry dated 14 August 1945 signed by Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia Command. This identifies Jim as 14537135 Gnr. J. Rigby, 178 Field Regiment, RA. I also have a Soldier Release Book X801. This states that his call up date was 18 Feb 1943 and his release date was 21 May 1947 (?). If anyone can help with info on where he served or how I can find out more for myself it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve

Hi Steve The 178th went to Java and stayed there until disbandment. They mainly served on West Java with a troop in Semarang on West Java. sent me a privat mail and I will be happy to see if I can help you more. Also I know there are at least one or two treads on the forum concerning 178 so you might find more info and people knowing something. Wellcome to the forum TijgerB
