Thank you for posting this. I've arrived after a google search. 3773801 Pte Dignall. Edward is believed to be my Paternal grandfather's brother. My father was named after him. (Edward Thomas Dignall b1944) Not a lot is known in the family about either man's service. I know Grandad served in North Africa and had an absolutely huge scar on his shoulder, acquired during service. As common to his generation, he did not speak of the war at all. Where would I even start to find service records etc? Thank you all for your time. James Dignall.

His entry in my database :

Hello all firstly I would like to say how much of a brilliant job you all are doing I have been reading through the threads over the last few days and amazed with all the quality photos and personal details.

So over the last few weeks I have been looking into the time my great grandad served in the military

I've found some details from the few family members that are still around
James Rowland Jones DOB 01/07/1925 in Chester he served in the Kings liverpool regiment (
Sind District (Western Independent District, Central Command) judging by the badge on his sleeve.
My nan (his daughter) told me that he spoke very little of the war and wouldn't touch the likes of rice/currys. A few photos are still around in storage with a possible service record he also told me that he had been a mp or security for a period of time.

The Sind District formation sign might indicate service with the 13th battalion King's as they were stationed there after Operation Longcloth. You should check the excellent Chindit Chasing website to see if he is listed there.

I have one soldier named Jones with the initial J.
He was a Signalman formerly with the Royal Welch Fusiliers before being transferred to the 13th Battalion, The King's Regiment in time for Operation Longcloth.

It would appear that Arthur saw quite a bit of action in North Africa before joining the 77th Indian Infantry Brigade. Casualty Cards also exist for Olney, Gorman, Atkins and Small.

Have I sent you this RE roll before HW? Got so much stuff I can never remember.

Possibly, is it the list that mentions every R.E. Coy that served on Operation Thursday? If so I already have it? I will check my Chindit R.E. file.

That's the one. I would be annoyed if I had not sent it over before. :)

Here is his Casualty Card with an interesting note about his King's Regiment transfer being cancelled. I am not sure about the significance of the term, Dummy Card.

Hi High Wood, my Uncle, Pte Albert Davies (5110813), was with the 1st from 1942 to 1946 and served in the first Chindit expedition. He contracted Malaria, and was left to fend for himself. He was reported missing for several weeks, but made his way back and spent the rest of the war, in service with the 1st, in Karachi. He had a shooting team medal from 1944 SIND competition. we also have a report of a L/C Davies competing and a photograph of him at Napier Barracks (from "Chindit Chasing " Website) with a stripe and assume that he was made up, for some reason during that time. Although he was demobbed as Pte. Do you have any further information on him and is there anything else I can add. Michael Crehan
