Can anyone help advise of the last action the 2/6th Queens thought in Italy before 1st Sept 1944.

Tracing an Ernest A W Roberts who died of wounds on the 1st September 1944 and buried at Montecchio war cem.

Trying to understand where he possibly got wounds ?

I think they were fighting against the Gothic line around the foglio river, but not to sure.

    Many thanks,
    Alan

    Guardroom-
You are absolutely right - the 2/6th batt along with the 2/5 and 2/7 Queens of the 169th bde of the 56th Div had recently been returned from a re-fit and rest in Egypt after their battles at Anzio and at the Garigliano/Monte Camino etc.

They were involved with the assault on the Gothic line with Vth Corps alongside the Canadians which started at the Metauro River on 25th Aug and by Sept 1st were all on the Foglia River - which was the - what we thought was the main Gothic Line defences - which finally truned out to be past there on the Coriano Ridge wher the 169th had a bad time of it at Croce and Gemmano.

The Montecchio Cemetery is close to the Gradara and Coriano Ridge cemetery's which have another four in that locality as well as Ghurka Crematorium which will indicate the ferocity of those battles which were a month long and only 30 miles from near Pesaro to Rimini.

Don't know if this will work but it'a map of th area where the Canadians went throuh the Gothic Line - as we thought at the time - you will note that while we started over the Metauro on Aug 25th - it was only about 15 miles to the Foglia - but it took six days as by then the 1st paras - 26th panzers and 29th Pz grens had moved in to slow us down - the 56th Div were to the left of the 46th Div and were in the hills towards Gemmano - which was another fierce battle - but that was after Sept 1st

Guardroom - With many thanks to Paul for the above maps -

you will note that on the LH map - "the approach to the Gothic" - the 46th Div is on the LH flank of the Canadian Corps - the 169th Bde of the 56th div was then on the LH flank of th 46th Div - at that point and this is where your friend was wounded and probably taken to the CCS in Ancona on the coast where he died.

The 169th must have taken a pasting at that area as they were 'rested' for the initial battles at Gemmano - you might "Google Map" for the Montelabbate town which will give you the direction they were heading for Gemmano a few days later with the 1st armoured going toward Ceresolo - this was the start of the week long battle for the Coriano Ridge - San Martino and San Fortunato, the City of Rimini being captured by the 23rd September.
    Cheers
