Hello all, I am currently researching my great-grandfather's service but cannot find why he was awarded his MiD. I have found his mentions in the London Gazette but no further detail. Are recommendation letters available online or do they exist in TNA? I have found out why he was awarded his MBE but am struggling with this. I have included his information below and would be most grateful for any help. His MBE record is available to download for free after you register. File: WO 373/72/801. See: Recommendation for Award for King, Frederick George Rank: Lieutenant Service... | The National Archives Long day when I read your post, unsure whether you had this. Identifying a MiD is difficult, so I've relied on members patience and skill. Hopefully one of them will be along. He has not appeared here before your post, either by name or number. We always recommend applying for a service record, even if it may take a year to appear, either from MoD or TNA. Some tips en route next.
Thank you very much for your help, I was able to find this document which is his recommendation for his MBE but cannot find his recommendation for his MiD. Do you know where I may find this if it is not on the same TNA search area?
Page 1371 | Supplement 36436, 21 March 1944 | Londo... Citations for MiDs can be difficult to find as you have discovered. The Gazette indicates that his was for service in Sicily so the relevant War Diaries might provide further details.
Amazing, that is incredibly helpful. I have requested his service records so hope to find out soon the unit he was with and then will sift through their war diaries.
He commanded XIII (British) Corps Troops Ordnance in both Sicily and Italy. XIII (British) Corps had a huge part in the Fourth Battle of Cassino in May 44. Regards Frank
Hello, Thank you very much for this information, it is incredibly helpful. May I ask how you find this out or where I can find more about him? I have tried to find his unit diaries but I am struggling. Thank you, Barney
Barney. I am a battlefield guide for the Italian Campaign and specialise in the four battles of Monte Cassino Jan-May 44. They are awesome. I found his command in the citation for his MBE. I am not surprised that he was recognised, logistics is a fundamental part of warfare. Regards Frank
Barney. Get hold of Gary Tankard in this site. If WDs exist for his sub-unit, Gary will find them. Regards Frank
