Re. THE 8TH ARMOURED BRIGADE ENTRAINS AT NEWMARKET TO TRANSFER TO ITS PRE-INVASION ASSEMBLY AREA IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND (PART 2) [Allocated Title] 10/4/1944 DESCRIPTION Full description The camera dwells on a railway signal at Wood Ditton level crossing as it indicates 'go' and on the wheels of a train as it rushes by. An LNER locomotive is put onto a turntable at Newmarket Old Station where tanks belonging to the 24th Lancers are driven onto flat cars. 'Warflats' belonging to another train are shunted into the station. A locomotive driver awaits the departure signal in his cab. Two tank crewmen chain their Sherman to its 'Warflats'. The train, consisting of ten loaded 'Warflats', a passenger coach and two locomotives in tandem, is filmed entering Cambridge where two firemen fill a locomotive tender with water. The train then leaves for Winchester. At Newmarket, half tracks and a Valentine bridgelayer from the 4/7th Dragoon Guards are driven onto 'Conflats'. General Eisenhower, allied Supreme Commander, arrives with members of his staff and accompanied by an RAF railway transport officer, inspects the 24th Lancers' armour and soft-skinned vehicles before reboarding his special train. the bridgelayer is finally made secure, the 'Conflats' are coupled up and the station guard waves the train off. This film is superb for those of us who closely look at vehicle T-Numbers... 24th Lancers have little or no decent records so to find a film from which one can deduce six T-numbers is brill: T-148511 & T-152280 - Shermans from C Sqn loading up... T-156875, T-156478, T-156850 & 156830 Stuart 5s noted during the Eisenhower inspection... So good !
Hi Roddy, Long time no see. I have a few more Sherman numbers (Fireflies)T148465 - Sherman Tank - Mark Haywood, 148496 - British tanks In Normandy, Sherman III's 150975, 151040,151317, 152214, 152248 all A Sqn 3 trp, 152350 BUCCANEER B Sqn 5 trp all courtesy Steve Pannell and 152281 HQ - British tanks In Normandy. The Stuarts are M3A1's surely? Also the number is T156748 not T156478. Cheers Kevin

Kevin You are dead right - T-156748 NOT 478 and thank you for the additional nos... Ref veh types, I am none to hot but was going on a listing fm the BTM but delighted to change my listings...does anyone have a Contract Card we could use ? I have now been doing the numbers for 21 years...I am even doing the conversions from T-Nos to the Z groups and the Allied Nos Canadians, Czechs, Poles, Norwegians, Belgiques, Dutch and the like...it just never ends !
.....and, the icing on the cake, Rob Miles has recently identified dad's tank (T152248) and another tank from 3rd Troop on the same film series! Note the 3 inside the A Squadron triangle on Cpl Johnsons Sherman in front of T152248
Sorry to intrude with more 3rd Troop A Squadron photos on a C Squadron thread but, hey ho, it's all the fault of Miles/de Normann/Tucker for getting my attention this (work slow) afternoon! As T152248 appears to be the last on the train and Cpl Johnsons Sherman is in front then, on the basis that I presume Troops of three tanks travelled together, there is a good chance that the tank in front of Johnsons Sherman is that of Sgt Harry Dews.
