I think you have the wrong photo. That's not a Welsh Guardsman & looks more like WW1. Sergeant in The Welch Regiment, from the collar insignia looks like one of the Pioneer battalions.
Once a serviceman's unit has been accurately established the next route is to look for war diaries or other written histories. Member dbf is our resident expert on the Guards and you might like to look at her posts here: Welsh Guards: Reference Thread As luck would have it the transcripts start in July 1940, not my area but there is some info here: Welsh Guards in the Second World War - Researching WW2 Soldiers.
In view of your photo and Owen's post #8, could this be him? First name(s) Charles Henry Last name Holland Year - Service number - Regiment Welsh Regiment Regiment as transcribed 1 Welsh Regt Country Great Britain Document details Prisoners of the First World War, the International Committee of the Red Cross Reference numbers PA 566 Conflict World War 1 Record set Prisoners Of War 1715-1945 Category Military, armed forces & conflict Subcategory First World War May help if you can give some further information on your uncle, ie date of birth/death, locations etc. Do you know for certain he was a POW?
You may want to have a look through this file and see if he is mentioned - Welsh Guards Missing Personnel, BEF | WW2Talk Steve
Thank you Tony I will research this. I have 3 great Uncles (brothers) who all served in WW2 . I have several old photos and also an original death notice for one of them. My family and I are researching our family tree - it is both interesting and exciting what we are finding out.
Maybe start a thread & post the photos you have so we can help ID regiments etc . Did you see my earlier post about the one you posted ?
