2nd Battalion Scots Guards Officers - Photo - Kasr El Nil Barracks, Cairo, Egypt April 1940

    I came across this photo in the forum Gallery section today. Don’t think it’s been posted on the open forum previously.

    After spending a few months in the Western Desert after the outbreak of war with Germany 2nd SG were in Kasr El Nil Barracks for most of 1940 into early 1941. They went back into the Western Desert in April 1941 in response to the advance of the recently arrived German Africa Korps.

    I’ve attached a WW1 era map of central Cairo with Kasr El Nil Barracks shown at Number 50. Many of the other marked locations would be familiar to WW2 personnel.

    Second image is an inter war period aerial photo showing the position of the barracks adjacent to the bridge over the River Nile.
