    Hi,

I'm trying to find out more about my Grandfather's time in the war and know he was in the Irish Guards 3rd Battalion and was wounded on either the 1st or 2nd October 1944 (he was evacuated to the UK on 3rd October 1944).

Would anyone be able to provide any information as to where the Battalion where on these days and what they were doing.

Any information would be greatly appreaciated.

May I suggest trying to track down a copy of History of the Irish Guards in the Second World War by Major D.J.L. Fitzgerald.

It's very good & will tell you lots about where your Grandfather served.

    A few here.

Hi Jeanette and welcome to the forum....I think there's some 3 IG stuff posted in the Guards section of the forum.

In the unlikely event I have time I'll post up the info from the Regts History. Another alternative is obtaining a copy of the Bn's war diary for 1944 from the National Archives.

    Cheers

    Many thanks for your replies.

I have looked into obtaining the war diary from Kew but as I am fairly new to researching I am unsure how much this would cost as it is unlikely I would be able to make a trip there in person.

My Grandfather never really talked about about his time during the war so I would love to find out more about his experience and in particular his last few days before he was injured.

I've attached the two relevant pages from the war diary which might provide a clue to when and how he was wounded

    John,

Many thanks for attaching the relevant war diary pages for me, that's brilliant. I'm off to see what else I can find out now.

Thankyou so much for providing this link for me. I've had a quick look but am very excited to get home and have a proper look at everything there.

The more I learn the more real everything becomes and I feel so very proud of my grandfather. I can feel a trip coming on to the Arnhem area so I can see things for myself.
