Does anyone know when the 3rd Field Brigade, South African Artillery The Transvaal Horse upgraded their 18Pdrs & 4.5" Howitzers for 25Pdrs?
I understand that they had 12 by January of 1942, but don't know when the rest arrived.

On 4 November I have 72 25-pdrs in 2 S.A. Division and 64 in 1 S.A. Division, and no 4.5" howitzers or 18-pdrs or 18/25-pdrs in service as artillery pieces with any of the major formations. My guess is that they were equipped with 25-pdrs over the summer.

    Andreas. Thanks for that.

I wasn't even aware that the 1st Division's artillery had arrived in Egypt as early as the 4th!
Maybe the 18pdrs & 4.5" Howitzers were for training. Or perhaps earlier still in South Africa itself?

3rd Field Regiment, SAA (Transvaal Horse Artillery) arrived at Suez on August 9th, 1941. 4th Field Regiment left East Africa for Egypt on July 22nd/23rd, 1941. 7th Field Regiment left East Africa in July 1941 also. The 1st Anti-Tank Regiment was reformed in the Middle East on June 12th, 1941.

Thank you David. All those dates pre-date any that I had for those units.

I think that perhaps the 18Pdrs & 4.5" Howitzers were for training perhaps.

They weren't held with units, but with Ordnance Depot. The 18-pdrs had presumably all been handed down to AT regiments.

I''l just post the whole list at some point.

Apparently the Transvaal Horse was at first Sidi Rezegh.
