    ... interesting glitch in CWGC
Tried looking for UK Civilian War Dead between 3 Sept 39 and 4 Sept 39.
Of 213 results, most were SS Athenia but then a whole range of Borneo and Burma deaths showing 31/12/1947 (which NOT Search parameter date! No UK Civilian death recorded for 3rd or 4th Sept on UK soil.
No Civilian casualty recorded in Hendon until 25 September 1940.
Incidentally, Heading Street was cleared away after the War, but was a continuation of Sunningfields Road NW4 (which IS still there.)
So, if there was a ground casualty, it wasn't recorded as a War Death.
    Local newspaper archives?

I've had a private message that
I think Ross posted the Report into the crash and I don't know where the story of a "fight" comes from as this seems to be a pure accident of a training flight, and if he was turning to land, he wouldn't have got away from the "fight" as presumably the other chap would still be waiting....

Sad to say, this may be the death:
First name(s) EDWARD Last name EVANS. Birth year: 1858. Age 81. Death quarter 3. Death year 1939
District Hendon, Middlesex. Volume 3A. Page 596.

I don't suppose he qualifies as a CWGC death, not being directly caused by enemy action, but nonetheless a very early WW2 related death.

sorry i meant flight, my father told me on the outbreak of war the pilot being jewish panicked stole the plane and could not fly by himself and tried to flee , his under carriage was in fact up as the report says so was not coming into land, also why were the police only told at 6.30pm ? and the plane instantly removed ?

Alan said the info was from his father....For what little extra it's worth, No 12 Heading Street, Hendon was vacant at the time of the 1939 Register, with only No 14 being occupied by the elderly couple Mr & Mrs Freeman - no other homes in the street were occupied....

the address of my grt grandfather was 12 heading st. and the front of the house was completely blown off , interesting to find info on who paid for the rebuilding ? the local newspaper of the day then was the hendon times, somewhere the truth is and can be found.

Alan do you have his Death Certificate.

The truth is there in the pages of the RAF report, it was an accident on the pilots second solo flight.

That's a completely different cause..... Had it been a result of the plane crashing into it, surely that would have been mentioned, even in wartime?
On the other hand, if the house had been struck and the front gone, would he have still been living there?
Perhaps he fell over in temporary accommodation, if the house was uninhabitable, but the newspaper used his old address?
Otherwise, regrettably, the facts don't support him being fatally injured by the crash.

... and don't get hung up on the "workhouse" as a place of birth - before the NHS, you either had to pay for doctors and nursing or you had to go to the only other place where maternity and medical care was available. That's why there were so many home births, but if you didn't have a large family nearby to help, then the workhouse was the only place to go.

And his death WASN'T on 23rd September as you gave me, but Monday 25th, as supported by the newspaper report of Friday 29 September.

Has anyone actually read the AIB REPORT into the crash of john noel laughton isaac ? it states quite clearly he took off around 12.35 and soon after , less than a minute having only getting to 1000 feet crashed into heading street , less than 1 mile away flying too low and too slow?after turning towards a dead engine.
