This--the place our messages are currently appearing--is a THREAD.

And this THREAD is in the correct FORUM:

    Just post them here.

I'm sure a kindly moderator will update the thread title with the required information.

    This is very good news.

He was with 11th Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry from 18/7/40 until 9/3/42, which means his physical movements and the unit's activities will be noted here:

11th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry (11 DLI) - 70 Brigade

1940: 11th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry War Diary 1940 - 70 Brigade
1941: 11th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry War Diary 1941 - 70 Brigade
1942: 11th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry War Diary 1942 - 70 Brigade

This is brilliant ,thank you so much for your help and for the links.

I will pass all this on to his son and have a good read myself.

Am I right in thinking he was with 7 RNF with the BEF

    Regards

Yes and no. On arrival in France he was immediately transferred to 3 Corps HQ on 31/3/40.

He would have come out through Dunkirk in May 1940:

III Corps (United Kingdom) - Wikipedia

He then had just ten days with 2 RNF at home (if I can read that correctly) before transfer to the DLI.

There's much more to squeeze from those papers, but I'm a bit pushed for time.

If nobody else manages to do so, I'll take a look later on.

    This?

    Reference: WO 170/1743
    Description: Companies: 658 Coy.
    Date: 1944 Jan.- Dec.
Held by: The National Archives, Kew
    Legal status: Public Record(s)
Closure status: Open Document, Open Description

It doesn't specify 'field company' (although that is generally the assumption).

    Thanks for that.
As you have probably guessed I am not to good with service records or army sayings, so I am afraid I have to ask what you will think is a stupid question.

Where was the 658 Artisan works company serving when he was attached to the Unit.

    Regards

He was with that unit from 2/1/43 to 14/10/45.

They were in North Africa and then Italy, but unless more detailed information is online, you'll have to consult the unit war diaries at Kew (references codes in mine and Tricky Dicky's posts).
