    Diane.

Funnily enough, I am just reading Peter Hart’s excellent ‘At Close Range’ at the moment. It is the story of 107 (South Notts Hussars) Regt RHA during the Second World War. Peter Birkin is one of three Birkin brothers in the Regt at the time.

Peter Birkin comes across as an utterly sound officer in very trying conditions so it was sad to read in the latter part of the book that he was brought down towards the end of his service by the Army’s prejudice against homosexuals.

Thank goodness, the British Army today looks for competence rather than allowing itself to be influenced by his or her sexual orientation.

I served with a few homosexuals in the days when such preferences were illegal in the Army. They were all very competent.

    Regards
