Hi, I'm wondering how I can find more information about my Grandfather who is listed here: Trooper ALFRED BERRY...

Do you know where I may be able to obtain service records, etc?

    Thanks in advance,
    Pete.

Hi Paul, just been given some pictures of my wife's uncle William Nance, killed in Burma, as you will recall. Anyway, here they are if they are of interest to you, as you’re the resident ‘Recce nut’. I have not got a clue how to upload pictures to site so will leave to you if you think they are of value. Best wishes Sean. p.s. I have no idea who the two soldiers to he’s left are in the last picture, which is a shame!

    Cheers

Thanks Recce Pete for the roll of honour. My name is Mark Lunnon. My Uncle ( my dad's eldest brother) is Trooper Edwin Arthur Lunnon on your list. I have no information yet about him, but I am embarking on trying to find out as much as i can about him. My Grandfather( Dad's dad) did not serve ,but died from injuries received during an air raid in the blitz on London. My Mother and her two brothers also served in the Army and Navy, but my uncle Edwin was the only one killed in action. If anyone has any corps history, photo's or can recommend any particular books or websites for information then I would be very grateful. regards Mark

Hi 4jonboy. I meant to write RecceMitch ,but I got over excited. I have just seen on the thumbnail photos that RecceMitch posted my Uncles name engraved on the Rangoon memorial. I have e-mailed the pictures to my Father, and I think he will be very pleased but quite emotional seeing them. regards Mark

Anyone know what the fight on the 18th of April was? Must have been a nasty one.

77th Brigade was given the task of cutting communications leading north from Indaw. After their landing at Broadway, one battalion went east to attack the Bhamo-Myitkyina road, two battalions remained in the area of Broadway and Calvert took the remaining three battalions west to 'Railway Valley' to block the road and railway near Mawlu.
On 16th March they established the 'White City' stronghold to block the railway at Henu, near Mawlu. Before this a Japanese force had to be driven away from the nearby 'Pagoda Hill'. The first Chindit VC was won by Lieutenant Cairns of South Stafford's for his actions during this battle.

The White City block had caused serious damage to the supply of Japanese forces and on the 6th April the Japanese launched a strong attack on White City. The attack started with heavy artillery shelling followed by an air attack carried out by 27 bombers (12 of which were destroyed). For the next 10 days Japanese infantry launched attacks against White City. The Chindits counter attacked using columns outside the perimeter with supporting air strikes from 1st Air Commandos. Heavy losses were inflicted on the enemy who eventually fled. White City was not attacked again.

    http://www.chindits.info/Thursday/BehindLines.htm

The defence of White City was by no means purely passive. On 10 April Lentaigne informed Calvert that 3rd West African Brigade, commanded by Brigadier Gilmore, would garrison the stronghold and that henceforth his troop would operate outside the block. With a striking force consisting of the 3/9th Gurkha Rifles, 7th Nigerian Regiment and a recently arrived column of 45th Reconnaissance Regiment (part of 16th Brigade), Calvert began attacking enemy staging and concentration areas, a well a cutting road and rail communication in the vicinity. This striking force initially had mixed success as it attacked the heavily dug-in Japanese near Sepein on 13 April to draw pressure off the block, despite intense close air support and shelling from White City. Further fierce fighting occurred as the Chindits attacked Japanese line of communications and troop squeezed into an area between Calvert and the defenders of White City. Although the Chindits suffered heavily - with nearly 70 dead and 150 wounded - the badly mauled Japanese never attacked White City again.

Sadly it seems that another name should at least be mentioned here.

Back in November I was in the IWM reading room with the diary of Lt. Roger Brewer of 45 Recce, (bloke looks about 12 in the officers photo on the other thread, he's one of only a few unmoustachioed guys in the picture).

Anyway he mentions that apparently "Adrienne [spelling?] Merz" who is a major seated in the front row of the officers picture, later tok his own life. I can't find a mention of him, and I'm unsure even of the spelling of his name. Poor fellow.

    Hi Paul,

Not really sure if this is the correct place to show this, but here is the Japanese index Card for another 45 Recce Trooper from 1944.

Walter East was captured on 27th March 1944 but survived his time in Rangoon Jail to be liberated on 29th April 1945. He was one of the group marched out of the jail in April, which is what the reverse of his card refers to. 450 POW's were deemed as 'fit' by their Japanese guards and marched towards Thailand, however, the Japanese gave up on this idea after a few days and released the men close to the town of Pegu.

Hope it will be of some interest.

Ethan, do you know what year did Major Merz take his life?

bamboo, the card is of great interest. If you find any others please post.

Sadly no. Brewer goes to a bar or something and it just says something like "was there with Merz (later killed himself)" and then goes on with the entry. I only had an hour or so with the (handwritten) diary so just read it quickly and made notes; also read one by trooper NP Aylen of 45 Recce, both very interesting and Brewer's quite moving. I'm not even sure as to the spelling of Merz's name, as at least one name in the officers photo is wrong, but he may be Merz, A.G 73184, who crops up in the London Gazette on a page full of Burma stuff, and seems to retire in 1948. Brewer's diary is the only thing that mentions his dying.

Following on from Ethan’s post the London Gazette has three mentions of A G Merz:-

27 Aug 1940 – AG Merz 73184 from 2nd Lt to Lt. Unit given as Royal Irish Fusiliers.
26 Apr 1945 – Maj. (temp) AG Merz 73184 Mentioned for gallant service in Burma. Unit given as Infantry.
8 Oct 1948 – Capt AG Merz 73184 retires granted hon. rank of Major. Unit given as Royal Irish Fusiliers.

The surname Merz is very unusual so there cannot be many with those initials and in fact, by searching official birth and death records, I can only uncover one - an Adrian Graham Merz born 1917 and died 2003. The date of birth is spot on for WW2 service.

The first name quoted by Ethan is Adrienne, perhaps it should be Adrian, anyway the chances of two people with those initials and that surname is pretty remote I reckon.

If Lt Brewer’s diary was written during the war then there is a problem in that the dates of deaths do not tie up. I am puzzled as the first names show some similarity.

Interesting! Perhaps Brewer got it wrong and only heard he killed himself? Like Pvt. Blyth in Band of Brothers?
I think the diary was written during the war as it says on the first page something like "please return this to my mother [address] along with the signet ring I wear on my left hand." which would indicate that he was carrying it with him during the fighting? conversely there are a lot of brackets explaining things that happen in the future, eg "Monday the 3rd Jan...excellent stew by Langley (later the first chap killed at Auktaw). So presumably he wrote at least some of it after the events. I wish I'd copied the whole thing.

It would be great if the Merz suicide thing was a mistake, I agree that the name is too unusual for coincidence. Brewer died in 2004, so hopefully it was just him hearing a mistaken report of the death. Or perhaps the error was mine and the name just looed like Adrienne Merz? All very odd.

I notice that of the 6 men whose ages are not listed, (6 out of a total of 109 dead) 3 are officers. Is there any reason why this should be?
