    Hi Kathryn,

My grandfather Herbert LAKIN was one of the 49th battery who died in Java. His grave is in the Ancol Cemetery and he has a cross with his date of death listed as 21/02/1942. My daughter visited in 2015 and says the cemetery is beautifully kept.
After reading all of the information on here I now know why his date of death was recorded before the invasion on the 28th February.
I wonder if you could have a look on your list of the 284 members of the 49th battery to see if there is any information on him?

    Thanks so much.

    Hello Kathryn A
My Father, James Robert Hellingsworth was a gunner with the 49 Bty. He was executed and his grave is in Ancol Evereld, Jakarta
You say your Grandfather sent you a list of all the 284 members, so I was wondering if my Father is on the list.
I have always understood that the executions were on 21 February 1942, but reading some articles this date has been disputed.
I would be grateful for any further information you could help with.
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

See my Post #33. Anyone with an interest in 49 Battery 48th LAA Regiment really should read 'The Storm at Kalidjati'. Both Gnr Lakin and Gnr Hellingsworth are listed. Their dates of death are given as 1 Mar 42. The book is well researched and covers the Battery from the UK to the massacre.

There was a recent article on a family locally to us in the paper. His family were knitting poppies for Remembrance Day. His name was Serjeant Alfred William Scowen. He was in 49th Bty. He died in Japan in 1945 and is buried in Yokohama cemetery.
