For conspicuous gallantry in reconnoitring hostile lines and finding observation posts, from which he could bring the fire of his battery to bear on the enemy. He was wounded during a hostile counter-lattack, but refused to be taken away by the stretcher-bearers until they had first carried back a soldier who was lying wounded beside him. "When the enemy broke through a gap in the direction of his battery, he promptly gave orders for his guns to be dragged out into the open, while he himself took forward a party of .his battery to defend the gap while the guns were being moved. His party succeeded in holding back the enemy sufficiently long, and then his guns opened at point blank range with such effect that the enemy's attack in this part was entirely shattered. His prompt action was decisive in averting a dangerous situation; and throughout the day he showed splendid leadership, and his spirit was an inspiration to all about him of whatever rank or arm.
