The 75mm HE shell was vastly better at knocking out such targets than either the 6pdr HE shell or AP shot, and the antitank peformance not much worse.

Against Pz III and IV, yes. Having met Pz V and VI in Normandy, 22 Armd Bde (I think it was them, too late to start digging tonight) made a case for replacing some 75mm-armed Cromwells with 6 Pdr versions to improve antitank capability (as a pragmatic alternative to 'more Fireflies'). By the same logic 6 Gds Tk Bde could have benefitted from being given some 6 Pdr Churchills.

Hi Margaret-Do you know what battalion he was in?
I contacted my brother about this but all we know is that my Father was a driver mechanic (Churchills). I also have his army record but there is no mention of a battalion.

My Dad was also a Coldstreamer which I might hazard a guess and say he was with the 4th Coldstream Guards Battalion.?

If he was in 6th Guards Tank Brigade & was in The Coldstream then yes, he would be 4th Bn.

Hello Margaret Ann and welcome to the forum,

Did you get the copy service records from Wellington Barracks? Hard to see how they'd skip note of any battalion. Maybe it's been abbreviated - would you be willing to post part of it to see if we can help?

Have you posted on another forum about your search? Just wondering as I thought I might have stumbled across similar information.

How far have you got reading up about 6 Gds Tank Brigade or about 4th Bn Coldstream guards? Have you got a copy of the regimental history for WW2?

    Regards
    Diane

    Hello Diane:

Thank you for your post. My brother and his wife did indeed obtain my Father's army record over 10 years ago. They e-mailed me a scanned copy but it is somewhat difficult to read as there are many abbreviations. Yes, I can post a copy of his service record. Also, Drew is going to copy portions of the 6th Guards Tank Brigade war diaries for me when next he visits the National Archives. I do not have the regimental history. I have found that the really good books about the Guards brigades are in the U.K. My next purchase will be "The Story of Men in Churchill Tanks." I plan on travelling to London next June for the Trooping of the Colour and to visit the IWM. I tend not to visit other WWII forums as I find WW2Talk the most interesting and informative.

    Cheers.

You might find this link interesting reading then, as there seems to be a good deal in common, although some confusion about Divs and Bdes.

Posting the copy docs would indeed be a good idea, as is getting a copy of the battalion war diary through Drew.

This is an account by another bn in the same brigade.

My Grand father was a gunner in 4 Coldm Gds and was part of the attack on Munster. I am 99% sure his tank was "Eagle" but cannot confirm - can you help? Also, was the Churchill they were issued a MkIV or MkVII - conflicting info. Thanks so much for any help
