    Thanks ... there many more references to being bored and also some blunt comments about the Lt Q when he was BQMS in the months after El Alamein when either B Esch or his own battery had moved while he was en route between the two.

    That was someone else.

    We have not yet found anything more about ROB Smith and his 1942 escape.

    Thanks for looking, this is what I found out from my "trove" research in Australia, can you point me in the right direction for the South African side of things?

    "Unfortunately we do not have any information beyond that which is available within the newspaper articles that have reported on this escape. It appears that the escape was lead by a South African Lieutenant Gibb, and there was a Lieutenant Gill in the party, but from what I have been able to find out none of the other names are mentioned"
